PARTS & APPAREL

JANUARY SPECIALS

Coming soon - Starting in mid to late February, we'll have a whole new line-up of riding gear and accessories including totally redesigned products from Rev'it!, Shoei, BMW, AltRider, Touratech, Giant Loop and more. Here's just a taste of the new and noteworthy, must-have items we'll be getting in within the next few months:

Rev'it! Sand 2 - Those looking for a jacket to wear on an around- the-world trip need look no further than the Rev'it! Sand 2. The already popular Sand jacket has been improved with a bevy of innovative new features. The jacket features adjustable VCS zippers that increase ventilation by 200 percent over the original! Plus, it has a wind-catcher feature integrated into the zipper for even greater airflow. The jacket is compatible with both Leatt® and MOVEO® neck brace systems, the latter of which conveniently stays attached when taking the jacket on and off. The Sand 2 also comes with a connection zipper. This makes it easy to connect the jacket with compatible Rev'it! trousers and eliminates any gap that would allow water to creep in. With the inner membrane removed, the outer shell can be upgraded with a Challenger cooling vest insert. The Sand 2 comes with CE shoulder and elbow protection and integrated reflective panels for nighttime visibility, or add the hi-viz Vest Connector HV for even more "conspicuity". Look for the new Sand 2 at Ride West BMW sometime in late February.

TECH TIP OF THE MONTH

The sun hasn't shown itself yet, but business at Ride West is picking up. The end of January at times felt like a busy summer month down in the Service Department with customers trying to get in at the last minute for the "oilhead" discount.

A reminder that we still have one more month of other great Service Department discounts, so don't miss out on those; no matter which type of bike you own (BMW or another brand) you've got 28 days to save!

I know I'm not the only one hoping for a better summer this year than last, and getting your motorcycle ready for the season early will let you take advantage of whatever kind of day mother nature throws your way. Now is the time to get those chain and sprocket kits coming, tires on the way or an inspection so there are no surprises when you head out for a ride. It's also time to plug in the battery chargers, air up the tires and get your cycle freshened up.

And please do remember; if you can't get your motorcycle down to us, we might be able to come to you!  Our sprinter van can fit at least two bikes in its cavernous hold. So give us a call or send an e-mail and we'll help you take advantage of our remaining service specials. :)

THE WHOLE OF THE  PARTS

By Jeff Conlin - Ride West BMW Parts Manager

The days are finally getting longer (whether or not it actually feels like it at the moment).  Get the jump on those upcoming sunny days and long trips by taking care of your routine maintenance now!  We carry filters, lubricants, fluids, spark plugs, points and condensers, plug wires, carb kits, o-rings, seals, etc for almost every BMW going back to 1970.

Have a bike that sat a bit longer than you hoped it would this winter?  Help protect your electrical system and give your battery a fighting chance by giving it a good, thorough charge before you start it!  We've got plenty of BMW's venerable Battery Tender Pro chargers in stock for $69, which include alligator clips, an SAE-type pigtail, and the BMW accessory plug.  We also carry the ultra-convenient $39 retrofit harness for all CANbus bikes. (Not sure what that means? Visit, call, or e-mail and we can explain!). Use it to keep all of your vehicles, regardless of brand, charged and ready to go.

Looking for a good deal on new tires?  We're blowing out leftover 2012 inventory by offering amazing deals on pairs of tires for the following bikes : F800GS (Mich. Anakee 2 or Pirelli Scorpion Trail), F650GS/G650GS (Dunlop D607 or Kenda K784 knobby), S1000RR (Mich. Power One), R1100/K1100 (Metz ME880), and most R1150 streetbikes (Conti Road Attack 2 in 170 or 180 rear).  Best of all, these pairs still qualify for our mounting and balancing labor discount!  They're all on display in our service department right now, and pricing is limited to stock on hand... so call to reserve yours now, they won't last long!

One quick reminder : If you attended the Seattle International Motorcycle Show in December and received a coupon from BMW, you must use it this month!  We can not accept any coupons after February 28th!"

SAFETY CORNER
By Steve Brown

Should you be committed?

The year 2012 saw 84 recorded motorcycle fatalities in Washington State. That's four more than the previous ten-year high of 80.

Why so many more than previous years? An increase in motorcycle riders is one reason. Each year more people take to motorcycles as a more economical way to commute. Another reason is the unusually warm weather we experienced in late fall. The nicer the weather the more people continue to ride through the normally cooler months.   READ MORE

ALASKA TOUR -
Second and final call!

Many of you have expressed great interest in our proposed dual tour of Alaska in late August. But! ...we have a lot of adventures planned and a lot of events we want to support.

Schedules have to be created and decisions made, so those of you who really want to make this happen need to step up and sign up, etc. At the beginning of March we'll take a look at this and see if it is a go for Ride West customers, a go for Ride West customers and others discovered my MotoQuest, or a good idea that did not quite reach launch velocity!

Here's a VIDEO CLIP from the MotoQuest "Off Road Camp" which uses many of the roads, or lack of them, that the "Bear Bait" group will use.

ASK MOTOADVENTUREGAL

Alisa Clickenger is MotoAdventureGal.
On a motorcycle, she's crossed the USA multiple times, ridden up to Alaska, all over Europe, and traveled solo to Argentina in 2009. She rides and writes for a living, and leads a women's motorcycle tour that teaches and empowers women to tour in groups or alone.

Dear MotoAdventureGalLast month you mentioned attending events as a form of vacation. What women's motorcycling events are going on in 2013?

MotoAdventureGal SaysSo far I know about four 2013 rallies for female motorcyclists. The first (on the calendar) is with the Women's Motorcyclist Foundation (WMF) May 6-10. Part of their "Progressive Adventure for the Cures 2013" which benefits the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, this is a dual sport training session in the Hollister Hills (CA) area. I was part of the 2009 Adventure for a Cure with WMF and I can tell you their events are heaps of fun.  You'll definitely learn a lot, you'll make lifelong friends, and you'll contribute to a really great cause. More info is at www.womensmotorcyclistfoundation.org.

June 20-22, is the Mid-Atlantic Women's Motorcycle Rally, and that's being held this year in Gettysburg, PA. The link to that is www.mawmr.org. I have never attended but it looks like fun! Then July 9-11 is the Women on Wheels (http://www.womenonwheels.org/htmlitems/ridein.html) 27th annual Ride-In in Billings, MT.

August 15-18 there is the Women Riding into the Future Conference (http://www.witwalbertarally.com) 45 minutes west of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, if you have a flair for the international. I was a presenter at the 2010 Motorcycle Confederation of Canada Women's Congress, and it was a great time. Speaking of International rides, I'll be leading a dual sport tour in one of my favorite countries late September: Bolivia. It's an enigmatic country and you can click on the link below for more details. Remember that planning a vacation is half the fun, so get thinking about where you want to ride!

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS KEITH THYE?

Keith Thye is currently spending four months recreating a motorcycle trip that he and Dave Yaden took to South America fifty years ago (50 YEARS AGO!). That first trip was just Keith and Dave, and they were gone over eight months.  The trip was rugged, the roads were awful, they camped nearly every night and did it on a

shoestring.

This time the trip will be different.  There are six on the trip: Dave, who is nearly fluent in Spanish; Jim Balz, a doctor; Michael Hansen, a decent technician; Donn Harvey, a computer guy; his wife Deby on her own bike (always good to have a female along); and Keith, who claims to have absolutely no special skills at all.

The roads will undoubtedly be much improved (most are paved now!), they're not taking camping gear, and should have sufficient money to do this thing right.  There is no planned itinerary other than a general outline of following the earlier trip and they expect to be on the road for roughly 100 days, returning in late April or early May.

This just in today from Keith:

Interesting trip so far.  We are currently in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, billed as the Cancun of this country.  Enjoying everything,  except perhaps the ridiculous border crossings.  They normally take up to three to four hours for the six of us to get processed, but yesterday set the record at four and a half hours.  The group is getting along well and we have had no major issues, other than some theft and getting separated a few times (which can take a few hours to reconnect depending on the circumstance).  The roads, however, are another matter.  I am sending you pictures of two "road hazards"?  The Pan American highway is now paved, but we are trying to stay off of it as much as possible.  Being the only decent road, for the most part, all of the trucks use it.  So we stay to secondary roads.  And the hazards are substantial,as depicted in these photos.  A rider must be continually alert for people walking on the road, dogs, pigs, horses and wagons, goats, etc.  Plus the quite occasional broken down vehicles that are just left in the roadway because there is no shoulder.  You glance at your GPS or map a moment too long and the trip can come to an abrupt halt.

The picture of the chuck hole has a huge dead rat in it (a good foot long with a one foot tail).  The road was a patchwork of these potholes and avoiding them all was impossible.  One has to just hope that you are able to brake fast enough so slow down, otherwise a bent rim can be a problem (one of our group experienced that---just hope it holds until the service in Bogota).  The other picture of a cow nursing her calf on the center line is a new one on me.

For those of you wishing to follow the adventure, Donn and Deby Harvey
will be publishing a blog at www.ADVdonnh.com.

Dave Yaden also has a blog, and it is at http://yaden.org/motoraidblog

Enjoy!
