» Team Ride West Moto-Picture Fun

Our November winner was Wayne Swan with a professionally done picture taken of Wayne on his BMW S 1000 hunkered down and blasting out of a corner at Pacific Raceways during a track day.

Our December winner is Craig Kerwien, who shows us that Northwest commuting to work can be beautiful.

We need pictures for varied promotional purposes at Ride West. We can use promo materials from BMW of North America of course, or purchase suitable art, but why not feature our own customers?  We've noticed that many of you are very talented with a camera, so let's work together and have some fun.

What we intend is a picture contest - every monthYou may submit one digital picture per contest.  You understand that we may use that picture on our web page, or on a flier, or - who knows where!  We intend to set up a video screen or 2 or 6 in the dealership with a rotating slide show of customer pictures that promote the BMW brand and the varied activities that we're all about.

** Entries are now open for the January contest!

** Please look through your digital pic files and select one picture you like and send it to team@ridewest.com with an explanation of who, what, and where.

Don't have any great pictures?  Consider this an invitation -  we'll start a new contest next month!

Thank you in advance for your efforts.

» Scooter Review - By: Roman

"I live in the city, and I totally dig scooters. I like to move around
quickly and efficiently, and BMW's "Urban Mobility" slogan spells just that.
Uphill, downhill, occasional lane split, a few yellow lights, pick up a loaf
and a bottle of wine, a few four way stops (sorry lady, too slow), meet my
wife at a sushi place, drop off refi docs at the bank, watch out for that
bicyclist - ABS brakes go tra-ta-ta-ta-ta. Repeat.

I feel at home on the streets with many variables. I was born and raised inthe city of 11 million grumpy people. For me the daily "urban two wheel
survival" means a fun way to get to work. If you like being on two wheels
around town, scooters offer utility which is simply irresistible. For me
personally, first and foremost a scooter has to have guts and brakes to
match. Then it has to be stylish. The rest: ample storage, good weather
protection, heated seats and grips is just icing on a cake. After years of
many hits and many misses BMW really nailed this one. I am sold!"

Roman is a longtime sales advisor at Ride West BMW. He rides a GS and lives in Magnolia with his wife Laurie. Until recently he owned a Honda Silverwing, which he has since sold.

The C650GT - Riding and Cultural Impressions

Seattle. Tolerant, accepting Seattle. When BMW announced they'd be rolling out a "touring scooter" for the US market, we weren't prepared for the amount of profanity-laced anti-scooter prejudice we'd hear. Like all prejudices, I believe most of it to be borne of simple unfamiliarity.

I've always been a fan of anything with two wheels, but I had to scratch my head in 2004 when the Suzuki Burgman 650 debuted. It was an awkward plastic spaceship with no understandable reason for being. So naturally I took one home for a weekend. On potholed city streets, it was more comfortable than my Vespa. In stop-and-go Beltway traffic, it was easier to ride than my R1100R. But the next day was the true test : 200 miles of the legendary Blue Ridge Parkway, two-up. Passing a line of slower "real" bikes on a gentle sweeper, leaned all the way over, throttle wide open, big grin on our faces... I finally understood. Big scooters are about making real riding easy and fun.

Of course, the Burgman had shortcomings... it was buzzy, the brakes lacked feel, there was no engine braking to speak of, the instrumentation was geeky, the ergos and weather protection weren't very good... it was a great idea that needed development. Enter the new BMW C-series.

After spending a VERY rainy weekend on our new C650GT, I am truly impressed. The engine is smooth and powerful, and the clever CVT allows seamless engine braking. The suspension is perfectly balanced both on the freeway and on twisty backroads. The cockpit is clean and functional, the ergos comfy and neutral, and between the adjustable windscreen, spoilers, and step-through design, I stayed almost completely dry. Add automatic heated grips and seats, and as much storage space as two panniers? This bike shares for more DNA with the RT and GT-L than it does any smoky old two-stroke.

We'll soon be adding one of these to our service loaner fleet, and the sales demo is always available for a test ride. If you're looking for a supremely comfortable commuter with touring legs and ease of use in the city, you really owe it to yourself to at least test ride one, even if just in the name of celebrating diversity.

Jeff has worked in BMW parts for nine years and has hundreds of thousands of miles logged on a wide variety of bikes. His current commuter is a smoky old two-stroke LML-Vespa.

» Tech Tip Of The Month

This month it's all about saving you money! We are a month into our winter specials, and we have some really good bargains that you should take advantage of while you can. Along with the fantastic savings, we are also offering free pick-up(within the city) for repairs exceeding $250. If you only require minor repairs, we may still be able to help you out with transportation.  For instance, if we are already in your area picking up another motorcycle we can fit two in our fully-enclosed sprinter van.

Please don't hesitate to call or e-mail us in Service; I'm sure we can figure out how to get your motorcycle into the shop for needed work during these slower (colder, icier, wetter) months. We can stay busy and you can save money. Ride West is committed to great service work year-round, so keep us in mind for any two-wheeled vehicle repairs or modifications you might fancy. Stay safe and Happy Holidays!!

» Ask MotoAdventureGal » By Alissa Clickenger

Dear MotoAdventureGal: What books about motorcycling can I enjoy while I am not riding?

MotoAdventureGal Says: Gosh, there are so many great books to choose from.  I'll choose two by other women rider-authors.  Right now I am reading Women, Motorcycles and the Road to Empowerment  by Liz Jansen.  It's fifty inspiring stories of adventure and self discovery as told by women riders.  Each story is only a couple of pages, so it's an easy read to pick up whenever you have a few free minutes.  Available on www.LizJansen.com (you'll get an autographed copy there if you ask her) and a kindle version on Amazon.com.

The other book I really like is Carla King's American Borders.  She circumnavigated the USA on a machine with a sidecar, and has some pretty entertaining stories about breakdowns and weird encounters. You can find her book (and others) on her web site www.carlaking.com. Carla's books can also be found on Amazon.com

Happy Holidays and Happy Reading!

» A Message From Our Owners »

Ann&Keith2

December is always an interesting month for us at Ride West BMW.  It's a busy month in terms of completing our fiscal year and setting the stage for the following one.  We start the yearly budgeting process in October, ramp it up in November and put it in high gear in December.  It's a time consuming process that tries to accurately present our forecasted revenue and income for next year.  Then we have the inventory process; another very time consuming procedure that takes weeks (actually months) of preparation.  The inventory takes place over a weekend and involves a number of the store personnel counting, itemizing, pricing, double checking and verifying that every nut and bolt is accounted for.  And then there is the year end closing process for our corporate accounting department.  Many long evenings, particularly right at the end of the year, making sure that every penny is accounted for and where it should be listed on the balance sheet.  With all of the local, state and national requirements that are instituted each year it is necessary that we double check these regulations.

Then we have our events calendar.  Seventeen years ago we thought it would be a good idea to get our customers involved in the sport even though they may not be riding much through the winter months.  We started slide shows of customers that have taken interesting national or international rides, and we usually have one or two in December each year.  As the years progressed we expanded our winter event offering to new motorcycle buyers events in our service department, seminars, riding clinics, rides (yes, even in December), club dinners and anything else we can think of.  And of course we always have sales and promotions of products and apparel leading up to Christmas.

And then there is the Seattle International Motorcycle Show which is held in mid-December.  Except for one year a few years back, we've always had a presence at this show.  For many years BMW Motorrad rented a major space at theSeattle venue and we supported it with a flood of employees.  Then a few years ago they decided that their advertising dollars would be better spent elsewhere and did not attend the show.  We thought, "OK we won't attend as a dealership either".  It was disastrous.  The show is a major impetus for the introduction of new models and to develop sales leads and we suffered sales early the next year because did not have a presence there.  Thereafter we purchased our own large booth and continued on in BMW's absence.  Fortunately, this year BMW has once again decided to support the entire national line up of shows.  And Ride West personnel will be there in force as always.

Put on top of all of this the holidays, with employee vacations throughout the month.  Who said that the motorcycle business is dead in December?  It surely was not us.

Happy Holidays to all, and once again thank you for your continued business.  We look forward to seeing you throughout the balance of this year and the new one to come.  And look to Ride West for even more activities and events in the future.

Ann and Keith Thye

PS:       The monthly articles written by Ann and Keith Thye for this publication will be discontinued for a few months.  Keith is on a four month motorcycle journey through Central and South America and Ann is involved in other activities that will require her attention for a few months.  Please look for the continuation of this series beginning in mid-Spring.
