Team Ride West Journal
Greetings!
» The 10th CHILLY TURKEY!

Saturday, November 17th  brings us Chilly Turkey X - a charity ride many of us have worked on and/or participated in for 10 years now on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. It's the 2nd of two "book end" charity rides that surround the traditional riding season - the other being the R-Ides of March event, held the Saturday before March 15th each year. 100% of the proceeds are sent to Riders for Health.

This year we initiated a 3rd event, creating a triangle of charity rides.  The dual sport Riders for Health Challenge was held in August and will repeat in 2013.

For information on why donating to Riders for Health is a good idea, please visit www.riders.org.  Riders For Health is supported by motorcyclists all over the world, and, due to the backgrounds and friendships of its founders, also by most Moto GP, SBK, and Formula 1 teams.

The traditional entry fee is a recommended donation of $10 to Riders for Health, (more is welcome) and your donation is tax deductible. If your company has a corporate matching program for charities, that would be terrific!

Following registration, you'll be given a set of route directions that are more specific than what is provided for Team Ride West rides, and you will be off on an adventure that will send you down a great riding road or two you never knew existed.  All roads are paved for the Chilly Turkey and Rides of March events.  Along the way you'll be asked to pause a few times to answer some intriguing, funny, or just plain odd questions. At the finish you'll hand in your answer sheet, order some fine food, and await the prize giving -  assuming you have enough correct answers to qualify. It's simple to understand and fun, and inclement weather is often part of the challenge.

By the way...Some of the best door prizes have been those donated by individuals or companies. We have two $30 gift certificates from Café Veloce (where we have our monthly dinners), for example, and Rolfe Imo-Gabbe has donated a healthy supply of the fabulous Rok Straps to be parceled out at the next few events.  If would like to donate a door prize in return for promotional consideration for your company - see me.

New this year are very high quality Riders t-shirts - a few as prizes and others for sale @ $20 each - with again, all proceeds sent on to Riders for Health.

October 6th -  a Team Ride West romp to lunch.

Taking advantage of an extraordinarily late summer, two dozen or more folks showed up for our October 6th ride.   This is the first time so many people opted to come that I'm not sure if the list of participants below is all that correct. If you are not on the list and should be, please let me know. Same if you are and did not ride with us that day.  I could've taken careful roll before the ride, but who wants to waste sunshine and time on that?

This is also the first time the group just hung out at Smokey Point Rest Stop for about ˝ an hour. People were having such fun getting to know each other and checking the variety of rides, like Mike Paull's amazing custom BMW sidecar, that there was little reason to rush off.

We had a bonus door prize for a special award, and it went to Butch Blodgett for his helpfulness and attitude. On the ride last month Butch helped out when the directions were incorrect (ahem) and a 2nd time when the ride leader simply missed a turn (cough).  This month he chose to put some items up for sale at the Parts and Swap meet and donate the proceeds to Riders for Health.  What a pleasure for us all to be able to spend time with people like Butch!

» Last Call for Nov. 8th - 11th!

Hello Folks -   I am writing to tell you about an entirely new event from RawHyde!  It's coming in November and we're calling it  Adventure Days -  a fun  all-inclusive three day event aimed at helping you learn anything and everything you've ever wanted to know about Adventure Riding.

The location will be at  RawHyde Ranch in Southern California.  We'll be hosting GPS seminars ,suspension and bike set up classes, sessions on tire changing & trail maintenance plus clinics on off road riding, field diagnostics, electronics,  etc.  Our friends from Klim will host detailed classes on how today's high tech riding suits repel water, protect you... and keep you comfortable at the same time.   The bottom line is that there will be clinics or classes on every imaginable topic relating to Adventure Riding.

There will also be daily rides in the local mountains and Mojave desert - some rides will be guided... others will be self-guided via GPS tracks which we'll provide for you.   We'll have evening entertainment, movies, travel stories and more. And the good news is that it's all included for the entry price of $249.  We'll have many of the companies that support our sport showing their latest products and many of the clinics will be taught by representatives of these companies.

But wait ... theres more.  On top of all these classes and clinics... all your food, beverages, camping, guided rides etc are all included too...  as well as a souvenir shirt.

Please join us ...  This is our first attempt at such an event and we want it to succeed.  If you have been to other RawHyde Rallies you know how much fun they are... now add in lots of educational value and we think you'll have a really great time.   AND you can sign up here - http://www.advlife.us/advdays/advdays-signup.pdf    Thanks for being a part of the world of adventure-

All the best,  Jim Hyde

From Tracy Jeffries:     It would cost $199 round trip. We could get a shuttle or share the expense of a rental car to get to RawHyde.  I am planning on talking to Jim about renting/having school bikes available if we fly.

 Seminar Season Approacheth!

Last week we presented Laura Seaver and her partner Tom Grenon with tales from the past year they spent on the road - mostly in South America.

On Saturday the 27th AMA Hall of Fame member and internationally acclaimed motorcycle author David Hough spent a Saturday helping everyone progress toward "Mastering the Ride."

More great seminars are coming!  Remember: Thursday evening programs are registered for on our web site calendar, and carry with them a $10 charge that defrays most of the cost of the pizza and pop served.  We have the pizza ready at 6:30pm, and the seminars run from 7pm to about 9pm.

Saturday morning seminars are free and do not need registration.  Coffee, pop, and perhaps some doughnuts are provided - but no pizza!

Check out this partial schedule.  For any that you like, please go to the web site at www.ridewest.com click on Events, and then register for the event, pay the $10 if needed, and print your "ticket."   Here's what's coming!

» Dinner at Cafe Veloce

We enjoy a fine time and great food at Café Veloce for our club monthly dinners. "Our" night is the 3rd Tuesday of each month
Most people arrive between 6:00 and 6:15pm, and by 6:30pm we have looked at each others bikes sufficiently to sit down to order food.  We're in the "club" room in inclement weather and out on the deck when the sun shines.

DUE TO THANKSGIVING, CHRISTMAS, AND ALL OF THE OTHER HOLIDAYS THAT ARE CELEBRATED NEAR THE END OF THE YEAR, WE WILL NOT HAVE A DINNER MEETING IN NOVEMBER OR DECEMBER.

This month's TEAM RIDE WEST CLUB DINNER will be on Tuesday, January 15th.

» Team Ride West "Concept" Rides

Team Ride West rides are referred to as "concept rides" because route and destination changes evolve during the day depending on the wishes of those on the ride, the weather, and events of interest we find along the way. It is not required that everyone on the ride follow the same route or reach the same destination!

» Here are the [GUIDELINES] that we follow.
