An Excuse To Feel Great

What Will You Do in 2013?

Happy New Year!  I know... I'm a little late but this is the first newsletter of 2013 and I'm wondering what everyone has resolved to do with this new year?

Personally, I no longer make resolutions. I love the idea of a fresh start but finally figured out that I don't need to wait weeks or months to get one. I can start any time I want, right? But for those of you who do start the year with a great resolution I found a list that you might like:

  • guilt
  • to stay busy
  • to earn recognition
  • to gain skills
  • because there is no one else
  • to learn something
  • for escape
  • to feel pride
  • to meet new people

There are many more entries for this list. What do you guess this is a list of? Excuses? Reasons for making resolutions? Things you told your mother about why you wanted to move out?  All true, but where I found them is on a list people gave as to why they volunteer!

Volunteering is not just for others anymore, you are allowed and encouraged to find something that's good for you in volunteering as well. So go ahead and be a little selfish when choosing volunteer opportunities. You'll be more likely to stick with it and do a better job if you are also enjoying the work.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What or who do I care about? What issues matter the most to me?
  • Do I want to use the skills I use on my job or do something totally different?
  • What would I like to learn?
  • Do I want a regular schedule or a one time assignment?
  • Who are the people with whom I'll be working?
  • What kind of tasks do I want to avoid?

Think about how much you get in return when you volunteer and consider why you want to volunteer, the visit our website and click on Volunteer or watch for Volunteers United in the Republican Eagle each month.

Find what you love and give a hand. You have nothing to loose?

Thanks for reading.

A pessimist, they say, sees a glass of water as being half empty; an optimist sees the same glass as half full. But a giving person sees a glass of water and starts looking for someone who might be thirsty.

Individuals who begin drinking before age 15 are four times likelier to become alcohol dependent than those who do not drink before age 21.
