How Does United Way Invest
Campaign Dollars? You Tell Us
United Way of Goodhue, Wabasha & Pierce Counties is winding down the 2012 Workplace Campaign. After meeting so many people and visiting quite a few workplaces, we are calling this campaign a success. All of the results aren't in, but judging from the feedback received from the people in the UWGWP service area, there is nothing to do but think positively. The messages of thanks and encouragement coming from those work places has been heartwarming. After one workplace meeting, a woman approached me and said, "I would love to give you a hug for the work you are doing but it might embarrass you so consider this an "air hug'". It is one of the best hugs I've ever received.
Next comes the hard work. The funds have been raised, now how do we invest them. Which programs are doing great work, getting good results and changing lives? We know there are a lot of super people in our communities doing really wonderful things, but we made a promise to you, our donor, when you signed your pledge form. We will invest your money in the areas of Education, Health and Basic Needs and we will work with local agencies to give them the tools they need to reach their planned outcomes, However, United Way staff will not decide who receives grant funding. We leave that up to you...at least those of you willing to volunteer as Community Investment Volunteers.
Not everyone can do this, time, scheduling conflicts and interest keep some away. It takes some very special characteristics and talents. Potential candidates must:
- live in our service area
- care about their community
- enjoy meeting new people
- have a yearning to learn
- crave great snacks
- have a week night bed time past 8pm
- be able to make tough decisions
Does that sound like you? If so WE WANT YOU!!!
Our panels meet 5 - 6 times, these include a training session, a session to ask questions after the grants have been read, two or three nights of presentations by the requesting agencies and one final decision night.
The Education Panelists are asked to commit to three years since our grant cycle is three years. Year two and three will be review, all of the hard work will be done in year one...this year.
This is a very rewarding experience and we try to make it as comfortable as possible for all involved. For more information about volunteering to participate, please visit our website.
Please call our office at 651-388-6309 if you have questions, I'd be happy to talk to you about this wonderful opportunity to help your community!
