 Action, Compassion, Teamwork, Service

Lutheran Church Charities has launched a new ministry aimed at reaching the younger generation (ages 20-35), bringing them back to the calling of Jesus; to serve one another.

ACTS focuses on the Millennial Generation, providing opportunities to be involved in service to the community. ACTS understands that this generation enjoys reaching out, helping others, and being involved in service to others, but often struggles to find ways to be involved. This unique ministry is designed to help fill this void in a way that encourages participants to continue serving, even outside of official ACTS events. "We want to light a fire for serving others," said LCC staff member Hannah McGinnis.

While the focus of ACTS is to connect millennials to service projects, it is not limited to millennials. ACTS seeks to provide opportunities for every age group by welcoming them to participate in events. By bringing awareness and opportunity, ACTS is committed to modeling the Lutheran Church Charities mission: "To share the Mercy, Compassion, Presence and Proclamation of Jesus Christ, to those who are suffering and in need." "We just want to include our generation in fulfilling that mission," said Erin Erzinger, LCC staff member.

As their first official ACT, a fundraising event will be held at Peggy Kinnane's in Arlington Heights, Illinois on Sunday, July 31, 2016 from 12pm to 4pm. All donations and 10% of all sales will be given to the Fisher House located in Hines, Illinois. The Fisher House Foundation is a national organization that provides free housing to military families while their loved one is hospitalized for an illness, disease or injury. Performing at the event is RENDITION, one of Chicago's most entertaining cover bands.

For more information, please contact Erin or Hannah at info@lccacts.org or call 866-455-6466.

Acts 20:35 "I have shown you in all things that by working hard in this way we must help the weak, remembering the words that the Lord Jesus himself said, 'There is more happiness in giving than in receiving.'"

Honoring the Code

A free resource for veterans, active service members or immediate family members

A dramatic follow-up to Invisible Scars - the groundbreaking film about PTS.

Throughout American history, soldiers have prepared to defend our nation. Most have served during times of peace, but many have fought in wars throughout the world to protect our freedom. A great number of these warriors return home with traumatizing injuries, some are readily observable but many are the invisible wounds of post-traumatic stress (PTS) and moral injury.

While awareness about PTS has made great advances during the last few years, moral injury is a relatively new term for most returning warriors and the agencies involved in helping them. Its role in the startling and rarely discussed suicide rates among veterans demands a response from our nation.

Honoring the Code breaks through the silence - providing vital information regarding moral injury.

"This is an extremely important film. It has the potential to address one of the major problems among our military community, which is the suicide rate. This film is a powerful documentary to educate people about moral injury."
- Jim Mukoyama, Major General (Retired) U.S. Army,
President/CEO of Military Outreach USA

Connecting, Serving, Caring

On Saturday, June 4th, Tim Hetzner, President of Lutheran Church Charities, was the featured speaker at a workshop sponsored by the Lutheran Military Outreach ministry of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Freeport, Illinois. It was the third in a series of three workshops for 2016 designed to educate the community on the importance of providing support to our military, veterans and their families. Their mission is "to connect people who have served or are currently serving our country with resources and people who can address their needs," stated Joyce Sasse, wife of veteran Dale Sasse. Tim spoke about the history of LCC's K-9 Comfort Dog and Kare 9 Military Dog ministries. Kare 9 Blitz, Kare 9 Britta, and Kare 9 Butch were on hand to meet and greet the attendees.

Included in the activities after the presentation was a special project for Chaplain Schultz, a Captain in the US Army Reserve who will be deploying to Kuwait. Immanuel's goal is to make 1000 cards to send with Chaplain Schultz when he deploys. These cards will be used as a way for the soldiers to connect with a Chaplain and pick up cards to send home to their loved ones for birthdays, thinking of you, holidays, etc. This will be an ongoing project with plans to replenish cards as needed during Chaplain Schultz's deployment.

If you would like to donate handmade cards, please email Joyce at dale_sasse@comcast.net or call 815-266-9871 for more details.

Romans: Embracing and Living Out the Gospel of Grace

WORD Bible Studies
We are conditioned to think of the Gospel in terms of 'the gospels' of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, but in my estimation, there is no statement of the Gospel more clearly and logically presented by the apostle Paul than in the Book of Romans - The Gospel of Grace. Romans is written only about 30 years after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. I hope you desire to study this book as much as I do to teach it. I pray that you will never be the same for having done so.

"This Epistle is really the chief part of the New Testament and the very purest Gospel, and is worthy not only that every Christian should know it word for word, by heart, but occupy himself with it every day, as the daily bread of the soul. It can never be read or pondered too much, and the more it is dealt with the more precious it becomes, and the better it tastes."  - Martin Luther

This is an in-depth study of the Biblical text.

WORD Bible Study Classes are non-denominational and are open to anyone regardless of church affiliation (or lack of). This is a safe environment to study the Bible - no church membership solicitation will be allowed!

This 30-session class starts Monday, September 12, 2016 at Harris Bank in Palatine at 6am, St Matthew Lutheran Church in Hawthorn Woods at 9:30am and 7:00pm. If you cannot attend the LIVE class, again this year we will be video recording the class each week (enroll as "Internet" to receive access). Those attending the LIVE classes are automatically enrolled in the online course.

The end of the school year at Deerfield High School (Deerfield, IL) was a little less stressful as 7 LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs visited with students and faculty. The K-9's and their handlers also visited with preschool children at the high school. Students listened to handlers talk about what each K-9 have been doing in the community and spent much needed time relaxing by petting the dogs.

LCC was invited by the Prospect Heights Police Department on Saturday to take part in the Village Open House. Nine K-9 Comfort Dogs and their handlers visited with children and adults in the community, watched emergency rescue demonstrations by the fire department, and got to meet "Bane", the K-9 officer, and see a demonstration of his crime stopping skills.

On Sunday, members of the K-9 Team at St John's (Lombard, IL) and their Comfort Dog, Eve, took time to remember their first "Top Dog", Barbara Miller, in both Sunday services. A special pin was placed on Eve's vest by members of Barbara's family. LCC staff members Rich and Dona Martin, Marie Payes, and apprentice trainer Kathy Kaczkowski were also present with LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Luther, Ruthie, Tara, and Damarus (in training). Barbara was instrumental in starting the process of getting an LCC K-9 Comfort Dog ministry going at St John's.

Over the weekend, Kare 9s Flex and Brutus attend the 33rd annual Leon's World's Fastest Triathalon in Hammond, IN. The dogs were a welcome sight for both the competitors and spectators. After swimming one mile, biking twenty-five miles, and running three miles, the athletes needed the comfort and relief offered by the dogs.

Thanks to your generous gifts, safe water is flowing for the staff and students at St Paul Lutheran School in Flint, Michigan. LCC received the following update from Pastor Walsh:

As of April 1st, the new faucets and drinking fountains were installed here at St Paul, Flint. As of mid-May, the filtration system has been installed. Our latest water tests have all passed. We are still waiting for the possible work on our school dishwasher (waiting until summer). Then we will be complete. The monies given to our filtration system by your generous donations have been more than enough to cover our needs, with no cost to St Paul. And, there is enough to cover filters for quite some time.

We also have a lot of water in storage and are continuing to distribute water to our members and community.

Again, thank you for your generosity in the Lord Jesus!

In Christ,
Pastor Walsh

LCC received the following note of thanks from Pastor Richard Tino (Global Lutheran Outreach). Last year, Pastor James Tino (Peace Lutheran - Sandusky, Michigan) asked you to help his brother, a former volunteer firefighter.

I was made aware recently that you donated another $500.00 to my medical fund last winter. Thank you! I received 3 successful lung operations that greatly improved my ability to breath while also enabling me to wean down my breathing medication. Your donation allowed me to pay the remaining balance of my bill in full.

Thank you again,
Pastor Richard Tino

On Friday June, 3 2016 the Kare 9 Military Ministry was enlisted to assist Military Outreach USA serve a Veteran and her two daughters. Andy Radetski, an LCC volunteer, drove the truck to pick up and deliver two new beds for the girls. The girls were thrilled to receive their own new beds and their Veteran mother was too.
