During the American Revolution, many important political discussions took place in the inns and taverns of Philadelphia, including the founding of the Marine Corps.

A committee of the Continental Congress met at Tun Tavern to draft a resolution calling for two battalions of Marines able to fight for independence at sea and on shore.

The resolution was approved on November 10, 1775, officially forming the Continental Marines.

As the first order of business, Samuel Nicholas became Commandant of the newly formed Marines. Tun Tavern's owner and popular patriot, Robert Mullan, became his first captain and recruiter. They began gathering support and were ready for action by early 1776. Click here to continue reading.

Gunny Pop Meeting Families in San Diego
Nick Popaditch Photo 2015, used with permission.

Nick "Gunny Pop" Popaditch, author and retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant, will be meeting families and signing books during Visitor Thursdays at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. Gunny Pop served in the US Marine Corps as a Senior Drill Instructor at MCRD San Diego as well as a tank commander during The Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is the author of two books.

Gunny Pop is a living Marine Corps legend, and is featured in the MCRD Command Museum (also open to families on Visitor Thursday). He not only taught Core Values to Recruits as a Drill Instructor, but also demonstrated them by his own example. He was awarded the Silver Star for valor in combat. Most recently, he survived an RPG wound to his head in Fallujah and showed that courage, honor, and commitment are not just battlefield traits, but everything in life traits, including recovery.

In addition to the moderated, OPSEC-compliant social media groups, chat rooms, and informative websites, several outreach programs to support Marines and families before, during and after the Marine Corps are provided by the organization. Funding for the programs is through donations, grants, fundraising and EGA Shop sales. In 2009, the 15-item online store began expansion, eventually becoming the EGA Shop. In 2010, the production facility was established on-site to design and develop custom product, dramatically boosting sales and providing additional funding for the outreach programs.
