Greetings!
We're so glad you joined us for this issue of The Care Package Project News! Thank you to everyone who came out and helped us with our most recent pack day on Saturday, April 20th. With 82 volunteers from 7 different states showing up to help, it was a major success. We packed up and sent 617 boxes of essentials to our troops serving overseas. Each box contained 2 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, as well as various other items. Now, we are in the process of restocking our warehouse for our next pack day on July 27, as well as preparing for a miniature pack day of sorts on June 6. Learn how you can help in this issue. We'd also like to remind everyone about the Cpl. Leon B. Deraps Memorial Scholarship Fund 5th Annual 5 Mile Walk/Run/Ride, May 4, in Jamestown, MO. If you have a friend or family member deployed to a combat zone, you can request we send them a care package. It's free, easy to request, and open to all branches of the military.
If you're unable to join us in person for a pack day, but still want to contribute in some way, for just $22, you can sponsor a care package. Sponsoring a care package is a quick, easy way to show your support for our troops.
Thank you for joining us for this issue and for your continued support of our brave men and women in uniform.

Pack Day Recap
Care Packages Sent, Volunteers Recognized
 | | Mail truck loaded with care packages ready to be sent |
In a break from some heavy spring showers, Saturday, April 20th was warm and sunny, giving volunteers a comfortable atmosphere in which to package more than 600 boxes for our troops in Afghanistan. 82 volunteers from 7 states across the Midwest converged on our facility in Columbia, Missouri and made quick work of packing, sealing, and putting postage on the 617 care packages to be shipped.
Since April was National Volunteers Month, we took some time in between packing the boxes and eating lunch to recognize, honor, celebrate, and thank the many, many Marine Parents volunteers for all of the hard work that they've done over the last 12 months.

Girl Scout Cookie Campaign
Send a Taste of Home
While our next official pack day may not be until late July, the Care Package Project has decided to hold an additional fundraising campaign for the month of May that will allow us to send Girl Scout Cookies to our troops deployed overseas.
On June 6, local Girl Scouts will be coming to our facility from around the Columbia, MO area to help us pack 8,400 boxes of cookies into 840 care packages to be sent to troops in Afghanistan and Africa. We have the cookies. We have the manpower (or girl power in this case). Now all we need are donations from you. All the cookies and volunteers in the world won't do us any good if we don't have a way to ship the packages overseas. To make this dream a reality, our goal is to raise the full amount it's going to cost for us to ship the cookies, about $12,000, by May 31.These cookies are not only a special treat for our troops, but they are also a comforting reminder of home. We appreciate your support! To read more about our Girl Scout cookie campaign, click here...To donate to our Girl Scout cookie campaign, click here...

Leon B. Deraps Scholarship Fund Raffle and 5 Mile Memorial Run/Walk
Sign Up to Support the Memory of an American Hero
On May 6, 2006, Lance Corporal Leon B. Deraps of Jamestown, Missouri made the ultimate sacrifice for his country while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq.
To honor Leon, his family, along with the Moniteau County C-1, Jamestown-area high school FFA, set up a scholarship fund in his name in late 2006. Since its formation, the fund has awarded $1,000 scholarships to approximately 20 Jamestown high school graduates, with more being handed out every year.
Money for the scholarship is raised through an annual 5 mile walk/run/ride held in early May. First held in 2009, this year marks the event's fifth anniversary. This year, the walk/run/ride will be held this Saturday, May 4, at 9:00 am in Jamestown, Missouri.
We STRONGLY encourage people in the Mid-Missouri area to register for the event, whether or not they plan on attending it, as a way to honor Leon's sacrifice and support his memory. His mother, Sandy, is one of our longest-serving pack day volunteers, and this truly is a wonderful cause.
For more information on registering for the L.Cpl. Leon B. Deraps Memorial Scholarship Fund 5th Annual 5 Mile Walk/Run/Ride, please visit http://www.leonderaps.net/index.html We also encourage those not in the area who would still like to donate to the fund to visit http://leonderapsscholarship.org/donations.html
