Happy New Year!
Our big news
is, of course, our calendar sale. The fun starts on
January 1st, 10.00 a.m., at all three stores. The
selection is awesome,
so come on by and see all your friends and neighbors!
We are also pleased to note that our efforts to
protect reader privacy have not been in vain—see
the Patriot Act update below.
And this month's events, both on and off-site, remind
us of why we love living in the Bay Area.
| Patriot Act Update |
 |
|
Last year, Pegasus and Pendragon Bookstores
collected more than 6,000 signatures
(out of a total of more than 200,000 country-wide)
on a petition to ask Senators and the Congress to
remove or amend those parts of the Patriot Act
which we believe constituted a great erosion of our
rights to privacy, and to our civil liberties. We are
very happy to see that the word got through, at
least to some of our representatives, and that there
will almost certainly be substantive changes made to
the Act.
Following is a quote from Lisa Graves, who was the
point person for ACLU’s Patriot Act lobbying:
"I owe it to the leadership of the radical librarians
who
braved the slings
and arrows (read lies and attacks) to stand firm and
be vindicated by the
facts!! You all did an amazing job!! And to the
booksellers (by the way I am
henceforward buying all the books I do not borrow
with cash!)!! Thank
YOU!!!"
