Meet our Medical Director, Dr. William Prickett
Running injuries stink!
Meet William D. Prickett, M.D., the Medical Director for The Arizona Distance Classic. Dr. Prickett will author articles to help get you to the starting line safely. He will discuss topics ranging from injury prevention and treatment, to recognition of a serious injury, nutrition, race preparation and recovery tips. Here is Dr. Prickett's second article:
Our grandmother was correct - an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
The majority of running injuries are related to overuse.
Pay attention to injury warning signs - specifically pain!
Pain that causes you to limp, change your gate, worsens during the run or persists beyond a day - may be a warning sign of a severe injury. Pain that is not alleviated with rest, ice, compression and elevation should be taken seriously. Many overuse injuries can be treated with a short period of rest, combined with therapeutic measures such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and therapeutic modalities with your physical therapist. If these minor overuse injuries are ignored, more serious and long lasting injuries may result. If your injury symptoms persist - seek medical attention.

Now is the time to just say yes!
The Explorer, February 27, 2013 - Aging Well
Our Honorary Race Director, Town of Oro Valley Vice Mayor Lou Waters wrote a very inspirational and thought provoking article in our media partner, the Explorer Newspaper about 'committing to be younger next year'. Come meet Vice Mayor Waters at the start of the Arizona Distance Classic.
Here is an excerpt from the article:
You've retired from life's hurlyburly. You're in your 60s or 70s and the walls start closing in. Retirement will often do that - slow life down and close you off from an active social life. You end up, hour after hour, at the foot of your television either watching the soaps or increasing your anxiety about the future of the world by absorbing the clatter of "cable news". Life has become empty and you need to fill it up. Read More here.

Planning For Race Day
Great Tips From John Corbett, Owner of All About Running and Walking.
The 2013 Arizona Distance Classic is just weeks away. You will be running and walking on a beautiful course. Our weather in Southern Arizona in late March is usually spectacular. The huge stand of saguaro cactus that you will see as you run across Honeybee Canyon is impressive. And the views of the Catalina Mountains that you will have as you make your way toward the finish line will be in your memory for days or even weeks after you return home. This is a magical place.
You can make your race day experience even better by doing a little advanced planning. The number of people who come in the store two days before a marathon or half-marathon and ask for a recommendation as to which energy gel, chew or sports drink to try on race day continues to amaze me. My advice is to try nothing new on race day that you have not used on your long training runs. Now is the time to experiment with how you will fuel yourself on race day. Find out on your training runs which products agree with you and which don't. The day of the event is not the time to have a bad "experience" resulting from trying something that your system does not like. Clif Shot will be the energy gels, and Gu Brew will be the sports drink on the course this year, so try them in training to make sure you process them well. I love them and they work for me, but we are all different.
The same applies to shoes, socks and apparel. If your shoes need to be replaced, do it a month before the race and get some miles on them. And be sure to wear the socks and apparel that you have trained with and are comfortable in.
We wish all of you a memorable weekend at the 2013 Arizona Distance Classic and can't wait to welcome you to beautiful Oro Valley, Arizona!
