Celebrating Athletic Trainers
National Athletic Training Month takes place every March in order to shine the spotlight on the extremely talented and versatile medical professionals called athletic trainers. The National Athletic Trainers' Association's (NATA) theme for 2016 is "A Safer Approach to Work, Life and Sport."
At Select Medical, our athletic trainers play an integral role in the physical rehabilitative process in the traditional outpatient center setting, on the playing field and keeping our industrial athletes healthy and safe within the workforce. We count on our athletic trainers to be on the frontlines in prevention, treatment and ongoing management of care for both athletes and employees. Through our WorkStrategies® OnSite™ Program, athletic trainers partner with employers to provide comprehensive injury prevention programs by implementing the following services:
- Injury Triage
- First Aid intervention (as defined by OSHA)
- Job Specific Stretching
- Job/Injury Specific Coaching
- Preventative Functional Assessment Programs and Strength Programs
- Ergonomic Assessment and Intervention
- Return to Work Programs
- New Employee Orientation Programs
- Health and Wellness Programs
The goal of the WorkStrategies OnSite Program is to reduce injuries, claims and costs for the employer with the end result being an increase in performance, productivity and profits.
We believe athletic trainers are best suited to implement the WorkStrategies OnSite Program because their background is related to and built upon viewing the industrial worker as an industrial athlete. By adding the knowledge of ergonomic principles to the baseline expertise of injury prevention, assessment, and the preventative application of exercise, our athletic trainers are able to recognize and mitigate injury risk in the workplace.
In celebration of National Athletic Training Month, our centers will be featuring our all-star team of athletic trainers throughout the month on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram platforms.

Statistics:
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):
40 percent of total injuries and illnesses are strains and tears and an additional 29 percent are musculoskeletal disorders.
- Median lost time for specific disorders include carpel tunnel syndrome (27 days), tendonitis (14 days), musculoskeletal disorders (11 days), sprains, strains and tears (10 days) and soreness or back pain (8 days).
- Work-related musculoskeletal disorders in the U.S. account for more than 600,000 injuries (34 percent of lost workdays).
- Employers spend as much as $20 billion a year on musculoskeletal work related injuries and five times that for indirect costs (hiring, training replacements).
Additionally, a 2009 NATA survey of companies that kept return on investment data reported a 100 percent positive ROI on having an athletic trainer on-site. More than 90 percent of respondents indicated employee days away from work decreased by 25 percent or more at their company. Almost half of the companies had emergency room costs reduced by 50 percent or more and more than 50 percent reported a decrease in costs associated with workplace injuries.
