Happy New Year!

It's 2016 which means we are officially in the year AFTER Marty McFly went to the future (or back to the future depending on your understand of the time-space continuum).

With the new year, we need to be continually aware of changes occurring in the transportation world. This can include changes in software, advances in signal controllers, or improvements to the vehicles themselves.  And changes may go beyond vehicles as well.  This may include new policies, new ways of solving for old problems, and new innovations in planning and design solutions for all modes of transportation.

With the new year, how are you going to adapt? Will this be another 2015 for you?  Or is 2016 going to be the year you embrace something new? It's not too late to consider another resolution for the year...

Looking for inspiration?  SDITE can help.  While the technical agenda hasn't been set, I can guarantee that the SDITE Annual Meeting in Nashville will cover many of these topics.  Please make sure April 9-13 is added to your calendar and keep checking back each month for more information from this newsletter as well as updates from the LAC.

Happy New Year and stay warm (check local listings!).

SDITE Presidential Message
By Hollis Loveday, SDITE President

It is a privilege to be your 2016 SDITE President. I am looking forward to an exciting year.

At the November 15 and 16 SDITE Board meeting, I shared with the Board my 2016 goals which are:
  1. Continue developing, refining, and reporting performance measures
  2. Change the Strategic Planning Team to Member Services
  3. Initiate a new Strategic Planning effort
Developing and using performance measures was initiated last year by Bill Seymour and everyone to which I've talked believes it is a great idea. I think so too. Performance measures will help us quantify the health and vitality of SDITE and be able to identify and address weaknesses quickly. The performance measures developed by the Board through Bill's leadership are easy to understand and relatively easy to track.

The Strategic Planning team, led by Cindy Pionke, does great work and in some ways is a victim of their own success. This team has evolved into doing much more than strategic planning, hence the name change to Member Services. In fact, it is providing many of our core member services through its five teams:
  1. Annual Meeting
  2. Information, Communication, and Outreach
  3. Leadership Development
  4. Technical Knowledge
  5. Work Force Development
I am adding one more team to the Member Services Team- Young Member Services. This committee also provides member services to an important group in our organization. Thus, the new "Member Services" team will be comprised of six groups with a focus on serving our members and meeting their professional needs. The Member Services group will continue doing what they have been over the last few years, but with a slightly different emphasis.

It is time for SDITE to examine itself and to plot our future. As a part of my third goal, I asked Becky White to direct a new strategic planning effort in 2016 that will likely carry over to 2017. Like international ITE, I believe that SDITE is at a crossroads. There are significant issues that lie before us, and we need to address them methodically and systematically. We are a strong and vibrant organization, but how do we address an ever changing transportation industry while meeting the needs of our members? Becky White has agreed to lead a new strategic planning effort in 2016 to help guide SDITE over the next 10 years. Looking back over the last 10 years made me realize how much we've accomplished from the first strategic planning effort. That plan has been realized and made us a stronger organization. The 2016/2017 SDITE Strategic plan will do the same, and I am looking forward to developing it under Becky's leadership. Becky will be seeking lots of feedback and support, so I hope many of you will help.

As you know, SDITE is an all-volunteer organization so each committee member, board member, or worker within our institution chooses to be a part of and serve it. Being from the Volunteer state, I realize how important it is to have passionate leaders who are making a difference in the transportation industry. I am grateful to the dozens of people who give their time and talent to make SDITE a great organization.
I want to thank those SDITE members who volunteer to lead and be a part of our committees. The leaders include:
  • Awards- Kirsten Tynch
  • Education and Student Chapters- Rob Baker
  • Historical Records- Bob Stammer
  • Membership- Jennifer Bihl
  • Nominations- Bill Seymour
  • Student Scholarship Traffic Bowl- Richard Caudle
  • Website- Mike Reese
  • Member Services: Overall- Cindy Pionke
  • Member Services: Leadership Development- Chris Kirby
  • Member Services: Technical Knowledge- Steve Strength
  • Member Services: Workforce Development- David Low
  • Member Services: Annual Meetings- Lindsay Walker
  • Member Services: IC&O- Meredith Van Duyn and Jeff Stephenson
  • Member Services: Young Members- Carla Holmes
  • 2016/2017 Strategic Plan- Becky White
Several committee leaders are new in 2016. Rob Baker took over for Kate D'Ambrosio who is taking on different ITE responsibilities. Chris Kirby is replacing Becky White as the Leadership Development leader. Becky White will lead a new strategic planning effort. Meredith Van Duyn and Jeff Stephenson will share directing the IC&O team that was under the direction of Scott Walker. Finally, Carla Holmes remains the leader of the Young Members Committee but I assigned that team to Member Services.

What Skills are Needed to be an Effective Engineer?
    By David Low (GA)

There are many qualities and skills an individual needs to become an effective engineer and to have a successful career. Engineering is dynamic so it needs people who can work across disciplines, with others, and continually adapt to new challenges. In your engineering career you should focus on developing a variety of skills including technical competence, communications skills and leadership skills.

The SDITE Workforce Development Committee conducted a survey at the Charlotte, NC, Annual Meeting in 2014. The survey asked in what area transportation professionals need the most help, and it revealed the greatest challenges were people skills and communicating. Some highlights from the survey:

Which skill set is the most challenging for you? Communicating and Managerial tied for highest at 34%

Rank the order of the skill sets from 1 to 5 with 1 being most important for achieving a successful career.
    1 - Communication
    2 - Leadership
    3 - Project Management
    4 - Business
    5 - Technology

Which skill set is most challenging for you? Communications 26%

Which skill set(s) are you able to obtain training through your current employer? Communications ranked lowest

Which skill set would help you most in achieving your career goals? Leadership 25%, Communication 25%, Business 24%

The Committee concluded that the first priority was to provide training in Communication Skills. We felt that this was an area in which SDITE members need specialized training by communications professionals. We reached out to four professional communications firms identified by committee members. Our goal was to evaluate their experience and approach to providing communication skills training to groups like transportation professionals.

At the Year End Board Meeting, the Board approved Communications training as part of the program from the April 2016 Annual Meeting in Nashville. Beverly Langford will speak in two 1½ hour sessions on different aspects of Communications to create awareness and teach skills. This is a Pilot Project, and we'd like your feedback on whether this type of training is helpful to you. Please contact David Low at  david.low@ghd.com or (678) 280-2105. We will ask the Board for approval of a one-and-a-half day "Train the Trainer" Communications workshop later in 2016. We're seeking individuals who want to develop their communications skills and can train members in their Sections.

Beverly Langford works with organizations and individuals on strategic communication, message development, effective interpersonal communication skills, team building, and leadership development. Her web site is www.LMACommunication.com. In addition, Dr. Langford is a Clinical Assistant Professor, teaching leadership communication to students in the MBA program at Georgia State University's Robinson College of Business.

    Reader Letters

The newsletter team likes to get your feedback to make sure we are delivering a product that meets your needs.  Of course we like positive feedback most of all.  And we can handle the negative (just be nice!).

But last month, George Pilkington (GA) sent us something that may best of all.  He sent a brief email reply with his thoughts about the article about NHTSA's Fatal Analysis Reporting System.  With his permission to re-type, this is what he wrote:

"I'm a little disappointed in NHTSA's discussion of the up-tick in accidents, they were pretty "plain vanilla."  In Georgia, GDOT blames distracted drivers, and in driving around, my observations seem to back up this conclusion, talking on cell phones which is legal in Georgia, texting even though it's illegal, listening to music with ear-buds and head phones."

Thanks for the feedback George!  And we look forward to hearing from others soon!

New Document from FHWA Focuses on Bike Design

Bicycling seemed to take a big leap forward in 2015 in many cities as more people started to use bicycles to supplement their daily automobile use. Designing for bicycles has become more and more a part of our lives as traffic engineers. As a resource, the FHWA recently released a series of case studies on bike designs from throughout the country to help communities get information on what's working in other areas. There are 86 examples included in the document - 21 regional, 6 statewide, and 59 local - that were categorized into several key project types, including planning and prioritization, shared use paths, corridor improvements, bridges, on-road facilities, intersections, and crossing improvements. Download the report here.
    ITE: Looking Forward to 2016
Written by: Jeff Paniati, ITE Executive Director & CEO

The following are some extracts from Jeff's email to the membership on 12/26/2015 that we wanted to highlight.

In 2015, we enhanced our footprint in the industry through continued partnerships with transportation leaders. We continue to collaborate with NACTO both through joint workshops and support of the Urban Street Design Guide, a groundbreaking publication. Our working partnerships with the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) ITS Joint Program Office and ITS America have enabled ITE to serve in a leadership role in developing ITS web-based professional capacity building modules and the new ITS ePrimer.

For 2016 the top priority is for ITE to be the "go to" place for the wide array of transportation professionals, like yourself, involved in the planning, design, and operation of the transportation system. This means ensuring that we are attracting and engaging the full range of professionals-engineers, planners, technologists, policymakers, etc.-involved in delivering transportation today. We will continue existing partnerships and elevate the profile of ITE as an industry leader. Communication to Districts, Sections, and Chapters as well as Student Chapters and advisors will be greatly improved through regular calls and collaborative efforts.

ITE will enhance the membership experience by improving both the benefits and opportunities that we can offer our members to develop professionally. The new ITE Traffic Engineering Handbook will be released in January, and we will support the release with meaningful webinars to educate our members on what's new. We will move in new directions in trip generation as we begin to focus on urban, people-based movements. We are planning to release supplements to the NACTO Transit Guide to help our members implement the new and novel concepts presented in this guide.

The 2016 Annual Meeting, August 14-17, in Anaheim, CA, USA will showcase the latest developments in transportation. It will be an outstanding event with excellent speakers, innovative programs and exhibits, and great opportunities to network.

    Have You Seen This?

The music world lost two amazing artists this past week: David Bowie and Glenn Frey. Therefore, we thought we might honor them in this week's newsletter.

And if you're wondering how "Take it Easy" applies to SDITE?  Does the lyric "standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona" mean anything to you? That's right...a corner in which two roadways intersections.  Perhaps it could have easily been "standing at the edge of an intersection in Winslow, Arizona" but that doesn't quite go with the flow of the song....
