Greetings!

I hope all is well!

It may be summer but there are still plenty of things to do in the ITE world.  Some notes:

  • ITE International Elections open on Friday.  Make sure to read about the candidates and exercise your right to vote.  If you have questions about the candidates, feel free to contact anyone on the SDITE Executive Board.
  • The ITE Annual Meeting and Exhibit is August 2-5, 2015 in Hollywood, Florida.  We hope to see a great turnout from Southern District Members, especially to cheer on Auburn University in the Traffic Bowl Competition.
  • Take advantage of the ITE Community to engage in insightful debates on a variety of transportation topics.  Of particular note is the ongoing discussion about the physics of ITE's proposed change intervals.  It's been a hot topic on the discussion board and one that you might want to follow.

We've also done a little bit of tweaking to the color scheme of our newsletter to match the SDITE logo.  Let us know what you think!

And speaking of the newsletter, I'd like to welcome Leslie Tracey (NCSITE) to The Connector team.  Leslie has volunteered to help us out each month and we look forward to her help.  If all goes well, we'll get a chance to meet her more in depth with a member profile next month.

Stay cool!

SDITE Presidential Message

By:  Bill Seymour, SDITE President

As you may remember, this year, SDITE is focusing on being more of a servant, more of a provider and more of an attractor. And, we are establishing performance measures to better measure our efforts inside and outside the organization.

For outside the organization, we established a Special Committee to look at Community Involvement - a High School Service Project. This committee, led by Scott Walker and David Low, is focusing on Teen Distracted Driving, and how SDITE can help teens become safer drivers. This might involve partnering with organizations (enforcement, insurance, other professional groups) that are already doing work in high schools. And, some of our Sections have already been involved with high schools in this area. We would hope all of our Sections would get involved with selected high schools in their state in the future.

We very much appreciate the time and effort the Special Committee has invested in this project to this point. The focus of the committee thus far has been on gathering teen crash statistics and determining which SDITE Sections are already engaged in this and what they have been doing. The Special Committee plans to complete its work and make recommendations at the Year-End Board Meeting in November. Stay tuned for more.  If you are interested in helping out in the short term, contact me

Teens / Distracted Driving

NBC News recently featured a segment on distracted teen drivers.  Accoridng to the article, "Motor vehicle crashes have long been one of the primary causes of death and injuries among teen drivers. But a new study by AAA finds that young motorists are also a danger to everyone else on the road.

In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in teen crashes in 2013, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, with nearly 400,000 injured. But a new AAA study finds that nearly two-thirds of the people injured or killed during a crash are people other than the teen behind the wheel.

ABC News also has a feature on the topic, including some video of distracted teen drivers before a crash.  Based on video review, "distractions were a factor in nearly 60 percent of the moderate to severe teen crashes studied. That rate was more than four times the previous official estimates from police reports."

As a transportation professional, we invite you to get involved to help spread the word about the dangers of distracted driving.  If interested in getting involved in your state, please contact David Low or Scott Walker.

ITE Journal wins APEX 2015 Award of Excellence

Original Article:  Michelle Birdsall (ITE HQ)

The Institute of Transportation Engineers is proud to announce that ITE Journal has been awarded the APEX 2015 Award of Excellence in the category Magazines, Journals, and Tabloids-Most Improved. The award-winning ITE Journal redesign effort is a culmination of visual and content improvements that have been led by Marianne Saglam, ITE communications and media senior director, and Michelle Birdsall, ITE Journal senior editor and writer, working with magazine design firm ContentWorx. ITE's winning entry compared the September 2014 issue of ITE Journal with a 2011 issue published prior to increasing improvements that have been several years in the making.
