Greetings!

Did you know May was National Bike Month?

From the League of American Bicylists:  "May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling - and encourage more folks to giving biking a try."

In honor of Bike Month, how about a few quotes involving bicycles?:

- "Get a bicycle. You will not regret it if you live." -Mark Twain

- "Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride." -John F. Kennedy

 - "Riding a bicycle is about getting back to basics. It's good for the waistline and it's good for the wallet, is what I'm saying." - Phil Keoghan

So, before the month ends, ditch the car keys and hop on a bike.  Have fun -- and be careful out there!

TK Committee

The Technical Program for the 2014 Annual Meeting in Greensboro, Georgia included a wide variety of presentations highlighted by the Keynote Address from Mr. Mark Rosekind of the NTSB. Mr. Rosekind spoke on the dangers of fatigue and distracted drivers. A list of all presentations along with the number attending each session is included below. All presentations will be available on the SDITE website soon.

The Southern District Technical Knowledge Committee will be compiling historic data on session topics and attendance in an effort to help future planning committees cater the technical program to the needs of the attendees.   The numbers for 2014 can be found here.

Off-Road and Out-of-Office

Memorial Day is May 26 and the unofficial start to summer vacations for many people.  Before you hit the road, here are some statistics you may find interesting from the US Travel Association (www.ustravel.org).

- In 2013, Americans failed to use 429 million days of earned leave -- an average of 3.2 days per employee.

- Top leisure travel activities for US domestic travelers include (#1) visiting relatives; (#2) shopping; (#3) visiting friends; (#4) fine dining; and (#5) beaches.

- Direct spending by resident and international travelers in 2013 in the US averaged $2.4 billion a day, $101.4 million an hour, $1.7 million a minute, and $28,154 a second.

Congratulations, Louisville!  CNN.com named Louisville, Kentucky the top must-see US destination for travel in 2013.

ITE Opportunities II

ITE will be accepting applications for the second class of LeadershipITE later this summer.  However, this gives you time to start talking your bosses, families, etc about this great opportunity.

More information will be provided as we get closer to the application due date of September 15, 2014.

Driving in Boston

We here at The Connector feel that it is our obligation to give you the tools to survive when traveling outside of the South.  Folks just don't talk the same once you head north.

This week's tip is important for those that plan on traveling to Boston anytime soon.  The Massachusetts DOT has a new campaign to remind drivers there to "Use Yah Blinkah", which in plain-spoken English would translate to "Use Your Blinker" of course.  More information can be found here

And of course, we can all laugh at ourselves because if the message went up in SDITE territory, it might be "Y'all Use Yer Turn Signal, Please!"

Either way, it's a great reminder to remember to "Activate Your Turn Indicator Before Maneuvering to Another Lane!"

Curbside Haiku

Your next installment of Curbside Haiku...

The New York City Department of Transportation launched a safety education and public art campaign in November 2011.  Artist John Morse published a series of twelve art/haiku signs that were installed city-wide to promote road safety. These signs were placed near eye-level at high-crash locations near cultural institutions and schools.  The next several issues of The Connector will feature a new haiku. Enjoy!
