Greetings!

Hello all!

You may be asking yourself why you are receiving a second SDITE "The Connector" in only 2 months instead of the usual 3 months.  Well, there's a simple explanation for that:

The Connector is now MONTHLY!

That's right -- monthly.

Now that you've picked yourself off the floor after falling out of your chair, rest assured that reading this every month will be worth your while.  Be patient as we get the new plan in place.  Any questions and/or comments can be sent to: Scott Walker, New Editor

Finally, thank you to Radha Swayampakala for his hard work on the newsletter up to this point.   He will still be involved behind-the-scenes to keep us in line.

Update to the SDITE 2012 Strategic Goals
By: Cindy Pionke, Strategic Plan Chair

As many of you may not be aware, the SDITE Strategic Teams have been working to update our team roles and goals for the next several years. We are hoping to present the updated roles and goals at the December Board Meeting and officially adopt them at the Board Meeting during the 2014 Annual Meeting.

In the meantime, I would like to share the roles of each of our Strategic Teams.

Team 1: Information, Communication and Outreach (IC&O)

To provide valued information to and facilitate communications between SDITE members and publicize our purpose to the general public

Team 2: Leadership

To equip members to become highly effective leaders

Team 3: Technical Knowledge

To keep members abreast of technical activities, emerging issues and technologies as well as best practices within the District

Team 4: Work Force Development (WFD)

To provide support for recruiting, equipping, retaining, and mentoring transportation professionals

Team 5: Annual Meeting (aka SPAM)

To help the LAC provide quality, well attended, and financially responsible Annual Meetings

Each of these teams has goals which you will have the opportunity to read about in future e-connectors. Stay tuned.

International ITE Update

This Section will be used each month to highlight items related to International ITE.  This will include updates from International Director Rick Day as well as other things we run across during the month.

This month, we take a brief look at the ITE Journal.  International ITE has put a great deal of time and effort into re-inventing this monthly publication.  As noted on the ITE website:

"The new visual format continues with the October issue. The graphic redesign complements the content changes to include interviews with industry leaders and innovators, case studies, member profiles, and success stories from the field. The goal of this new content is to provide a valuable resource for addressing everyday work challenges."

Take a look if you haven't already.  We think you'll like it.

Congrats to LeadershipITE Class

We are very excited to announce that five of our very own SDITE members were selected for the inaugural class of LeadershipITE.

This includes:

  • Sean Coleman (Georgia)
  • Jonathan Kiser (Deep South - Deep South)
  • Becky Malenke (Alabama)
  • Radha Krishna Swayampakala (North Carolina)
  • Scott Walker (Kentucky)

From the Sections...

In this feature each month, we will highlight two Sections each edition.  If you have anything to share, please coordinate with your Section President and/or Representative.

Alabama

ALSITE has committed to a large service project for the Alabama Department of Transportation, extending a previous project offered in 2011 to 14 young ALDOT managers. The current project will conduct Leadership Development sessions for four groups of emerging young ALDOT managers.   The workshop will use the International ITE Leadership Development materials prepared by Southern District ITE volunteers (including ALSITE senior leaders).

Each of the four groups will participate in two 2-day sessions covering 14 modules. The course content deals with commitment to a leadership path, character, and lifelong acquisition of leadership skills. ALSITE senior leaders who are organizing and facilitating the workshops include Richard Caudle, Darrell Skipper, Becky White, Jim Meads, and Dan Turner. In addition, ALSITE President Becky Malenke and ALSITE members Christy Cahalan and Chris Sellers will serve as facilitators. ALDOT is providing two senior managers as facilitators (Don Arkle and Vince Calametti) and three of the young mangers who completed the 2011 leadership workshop (Kaye Davis, Wade Henry, and Josh Kervin) as mentors and facilitators.

This cooperative effort between ALSITE and ALDOT will increase the total to 70 young ALDOT managers to complete the International ITE Leadership Development program through the assistance of ALSITE members. It is a true service project that contributes to ALDOT, our profession and our state.

Upcoming dates:
  • Fall Meeting - October 17th  in Huntsville, AL (Joint meeting with the Tennessee Section)
  • Spring Meeting - March 6th at the University of Alabama

Finally, Alabama celebrated 40 years of state chartered ITE membership at our Annual Meeting in June.  Click here for additional details.

Georgia

In the last few months GA ITE has had a focus on innovation and that "can do" attitude that is the cornerstone of our profession.  GA ITE has organized several events that have highlighted projects and programs that are cutting edge in transportation engineering.  Our monthly meetings continue to provide opportunities for professional development and networking, with recent topics on the new Multi-Modal Passenger Terminal, Traffic Incident Management and how information technology and the transportation industry are pushing the envelope on data collection, data mining and analysis.  The Annual Summer Seminar held in July drew a record 160 registrants. Numerous presentation were given on subjects such as incident detection using computer vision, flashing yellow arrows, bus rapid transit with traffic signal system priority, reversible lanes, and innovations in transportation funding, just to name a few.  GAITE also held a Technical Exchange recently on Wireless Communication: Why it Matters to Transportation Engineers.

And we're not finished!  There's more in store for the remainder of the year. The GA ITE Leadership Training is scheduled for October 25 - 26 at The Lodge at Simpsonwood in Norcross, Georgia.  This is an excellent program that has been very well received.  The program will equip leaders and aspiring leaders with the tools they need to succeed in their professional careers, personal lives and in their roles within ITE.  Please join us for our GA ITE Annual Meeting which will be held at the Buckhead Club in Atlanta, Georgia on Tuesday, December 10.  We are looking forward to another great year-end event where we have a great time networking and socializing, while we look back over the year and celebrate the accomplishments of GA ITE and our members.
