Spring 2015                                                 Vol. 7

The Windsor Cancer Research Group has had a busy Spring participating in a number of community events. We'd like to share with you some highlights.

CHEERS TO HOPE!
On Saturday May 9th, The Windsor Cancer Research Group hosted Cheers to Hope, a celebration of the support we have received over the past year. Cheers to Hope also provided an opportunity for researchers, health care professionals and community members to gather and learn more about the mission and vision of the WCRG and explore collaborative research opportunities. Over 130 people attended the event at Walkerville Brewery, including cancer researchers from across Windsor-Essex and Michigan. A number of toasts were shared in honour of the following WCRG supporters:
  • Windsor Regional Hospital
  • University of Windsor
  • Cross Border Institute
  • Caesars Windsor
  • Bear Construction & Engineering
  • Ron Truant

The evening could not have been possible without our sponsor, Snapd, along with our organizing committee and dedicated student volunteers. Thank you to all who attended. Cheers to hope!

NEW VIDEO SERIES LAUNCHED
Over the next year, WCRG will be adding a series of videos to our website highlighting the collaborative cancer research taking place in Windsor-Essex and with our partnering research communities. David Musyj, President and CEO of Windsor Regional Hospital and Dr. K.W. Michael Siu, V.P. of Research and Innovation at the University of Windsor kick off the series in the first video which debuted at Cheers to Hope.

WCRG IN THE COMMUNITY

This Spring, WCRG participated in a two community events. First on April 25, the WCRG participated in the University of Windsor's Research Showcase. This event brings research to the community by creating family friendly displays at the Devonshire Mall. Many kids enjoyed our popular healthy choice hopscotch and WCRG Cootie Catchers. The following weekend, we were one of many groups that had the pleasure of interacting with future scientists at Science Rendezvous. Over 600 people participated! This year's science theme was 'light', and WCRG light microscopes used to compare normal vs cancerous tissue were a hit. And our "Can you guess the cancer?" board continues to be a parent favourite.

Thank you to the students from the WCRG Volunteer Committee.

They were key to making WCRG's events a success.
