February, 2014

Welcome to the February issue of CrossRoads, a regular newsletter from Pharmacist Partners.
Pharmacist Partners Consulting Services
We Have The Answers.

It is a pleasure to announce the launch of the Pharmacist Partners Consulting Practice. Our team, without question, compiles a valuable collection of experience and expertise which we are now making available to our clients within the health care industry.  Our consulting practice is unique because our methodology begins with the perspective of the pharmacist and extends to practical applications of real-world solutions. Each area of our practice benefits from at least 20 years of experience! The accompanying link below illustrates the depth of such expertise and the various areas of the industry that we are equipped to address - from compliance, to market research and product launch strategies.

Black Box Strategies
by Dr. Sal Giorgianni

Products with Black Box Warnings often provide important therapeutic benefits and issuance of such a labeling requirement need not condemn such therapies to a Forbidden Drug List.  Unfortunately, all too often Black Box Warnings are viewed by prescribers and formulary decision makers as absolute contradictions to the use of such products or to put unreasonable impediments to access.  This often denies or inappropriately delays patient access to valuable drugs or biologics.

Equally unfortunately, product sponsors view a Black Box Warning as a reason to not put resources to the product clinical adoption.

Organizations such as Pharmacist Partners, LLC. provide resources to help meet the outreach, informational and clinical needs of clinicians, health organizations and patients for Black Box or REMS situations.  Developing customized, rapidly deployable and focused skills in an advisory, consulting or a finite field based initiative can be particularly important in resource constrained situations or when a time-defined program needs to be put into place.

February: Heart Disease Awareness Month
America's Heart Disease Burden:
  • About 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year-that's 1 in every 4 deaths.
  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. More than half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2009 were in men.
  • Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, killing more than 385,000 people annually.
  • Every year about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack. Of these, 525,000 are a first heart attack and 190,000 happen in people who have already had a heart attack.
  • Coronary heart disease alone costs the United States $108.9 billion each year. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity.

Our guiding principle is in line with our clients - to improve patient health.

There is a reason why health care conferences and similar industry events are so heavily attended. Apart from the long list of presenting companies or compelling topics of discussion the organizers of such events allocate substantial time for "networking." Attendees often use these sessions to catch up with friends, engage with their counterparts, or simply eavesdrop on conversations. However for young, emerging companies such as Pharmacist Partners these forums and in particular the networking sessions are an ideal time to speak to as many people as possible. It may sound futile or without strategy but the goal is to make our presence known. For example, a year ago two of our colleagues presented at an eyeforpharma event that was attended by several senior-level professionals from leading biopharma companies. Prior to the event Pharmacist Partners was an unknown entity. At the conclusion of our presentation we were fielding questions and holding follow-on discussions. Pharma networking is equally beneficial for companies of all stature. The emerging ones are looking for partnering opportunities or customers while the larger, established companies are seeking a competitive advantage that often presides in the knowledge-base of their peers. Pharmacist Partners is participating in two key industry events this spring. In both cases we are chairing panel discussions that are likely to spur thought-provoking discussion and potentially lead to partnering opportunities. I hope to see you or hear from you following these events.

Sincerely,

David
