Gogo inflight WiFi about to get faster
Washington Post--A new technology that could make your inflight WiFi a heck of a lot faster just got regulatory approval from the Federal Aviation Administration- meaning that on some flights, your Internet might actually become usable again. Gogo said Monday it's won clearance to start rolling out 2Ku, a connection technology that it says will boost download speeds by up to 20 times over more conventional technology. The big difference? Unlike many of the air-to-ground connections that make up your inflight WiFi experience right now - in which airplanes relay customers' Internet traffic to a limited number of skyward-facing cell towers on Earth - the new system routes Internet traffic through orbiting satellites, which can allow for top download speeds of 70 megabits per second. Gogo is installed on more than 2,000 aircraft across several major airlines.

Chicago O'Hare opens new runway, control tower
A new runway and air traffic control tower opened Thursday at Chicago O'Hare. Runway 10R-28L, the fifth east-west parallel runway at the airport, is located on the south airfield. It will be used primarily for arrivals. The runway is the farthest one from the terminal. Planes landing there will have a 20-minute taxi to the gate. In good weather, the airport anticipates a 24% increase in airport arrival rates (from 92 to 114 flights per hour) because of the new runway. Construction on the $516 million runway and taxiway system began in spring 2011, after American and United signed an agreement with the city to continue with O'Hare's modernization program. The new $41 million air traffic control tower was built to manage operations for the new runway.

Hilton launches global coffee promotion for meetings
More than two-thirds of professionals, ranging from Millennials to over 65 years of age, prefer meeting in-person over any other collaboration, according to a recent study by Hilton Worldwide of business professionals across the U.S., UK and China. The study also examined the role of coffee and tea in meetings and found the following:
  • More professionals in the UK (61%) and China (58%) agree that the most successful meetings happen over coffee and tea,  compared to their US counterparts (44%).
  • Chinese professionals and US Millennials value the quality of coffee and tea. 54% of Chinese and 51% of Millennials say that if coffee & tea are going to be served in a meeting, then it must be high quality.
In response to the study's findings, Hilton launched a global coffee promotion, providing complimentary coffee or tea for the first meeting break at participating Hilton properties.
High-End Hotels Help Guests Get a Good Night's Sleep
New York Times--Pillow menus--such as those offered by some Conrad hotels--are certainly not new to the high-end hotel business. But they are just one way that hotels are increasingly catering to the quality of their guests' sleep. The Peninsula Hotel in Manhattan offers handmade mattresses from Savoir Beds, a 110-year-old bedding company based in London. Starwood is testing ideas such as lighted floor tiles for visibility at night; a smartphone-powered room system that turns on lights, the television and other items; and specialized lighting to help reset guests' circadian rhythms after long trips. The Benjamin Hotel in Manhattan has taken its slumber one step further, bringing aboard a sleep consultant two years ago. Read the full article
