Hilton opens hotels in China and Myanmar
Hilton has opened a hotel outside of Tianjin, China, and a resort along the west coast of Myanmar. Hilton's hotel in the Eco-City project near Tianjin has 301 guestrooms as well as four restaurants and bars. The property also has a 16,000-square-foot ballroom, an indoor pool and a spa. Hilton's second Myanmar hotel is on the Bay of Bengal. The 51-room Hilton Ngapali Resort & Spa is about six miles from the town of Thandwe, has 51 rooms, three restaurants and bars, and a separate children's area. The Hilton Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar's first hotel under the brand, opened last year.
Hotels tighten cancellation policies
Starting Jan. 1, two of the largest hotel chains in the world are making it harder for travelers to cancel reservations. Many hotels let guests cancel as late as 6 p.m. on the night of arrival. That's about to change. Hilton and Marriott are rolling out new cancellation policies that will require guests to cancel by midnight the day before they arrive to avoid a cancellation fee, typically equal to one night's room rate. Hilton and Marriott both justified the change saying it will make more rooms available for travelers needing last-minute accommodations. This change, though not great for deal seekers, will help the hotels better manage inventory.

TECHNOLOGYCORNER 10 Tips for clearing space on your iPhone
Your iPhone is full of junk you don't need. And a recent class action lawsuit against Apple has brought to light that even if you buy a 16 GB iPhone, you can't actually use all 16 GB of storage. Here's 10 simple ways you can manage and clear space on your iPhone:
- Check your usage: Find out what's taking up the most space on your phone. You may have some unexpected storage hogs. Open the Settings app then go to General > Usage > Manage Storage. At the top, you'll see how much space you've used and how much you have available. Below, there's a list of your apps ranked by how much space they're using. (It will take a minute to load.)
- Beware of apps with internal downloads: The numbers you see in Manage Storage include how much the app itself takes up combined with the data inside it. Some apps are small by themselves but can store a lot of files. You can tap any app icon in Manage Storage to see the app size versus the downloads within it.
- Delete those unused games: Many gaming apps are small, but there are some that can take up more than 1 GB of space because of 3-D graphics. You can do that within Manage Storage by tapping on the app.
- Remove old podcasts and videos: All those "Serial" podcasts ... are you really going to listen to them again? A 30-minute podcast can be 25 MB. Apple's Podcast app even sorts which ones you have played at the bottom of each list. Just swipe left on the individual podcast to delete. Same thing goes with videos. Swipe left and tap delete within the Video app.
- Set your messages to automatically expire: With iOS 8, you can now automatically delete older messages. If you like going back through old messages, don't go this route. Go to Settings > Messages. Under Keep Message, select 30 days or 1 year vs Forever.
- Store your photos elsewhere: Save space by having your photo library back up automatically to a cloud storage system, Google+ or Dropbox
- Stop using Photo Stream: Your iPhone's Photo Stream automatically syncs your last 1,000 photos across your iOS devices. But that means it's storing 1,000 photos -- about 1 GB -- twice. So unless you need to share your photos from your iPad to your iPhone all the time, turn it off. Settings > Photos & Camera > Turn off My Photo Stream.
- Only save HDR photos: If you have your photos automatically backed up and are deleting them (see Tip 6), that should no longer be your space hog. But you may have noticed that your phone can store two images of the same photo. If you choose to shoot in HDR, then you don't need to keep the normal photo as well. Go to Settings > Photo & Camera. Scroll to the bottom and deselect Keep Normal Photo.
- Sign up for a streaming music service: The days of storing all your songs on your device are over. Download the albums you love, and stream the rest. If you're devoted to iTunes, sign up for iTunes Match. For $25 per year, you can have every track in your iTunes library accessible via the cloud. You can download any song or album directly to your phone by tapping on the cloud icon next to it. Or, if you want to have access to a larger library, consider the music streaming service Spotify.
- Clear out corrupted files: Sometimes files can get corrupted and take up more space than they should. The easiest way to clear this out is to back up your data and restore your phone via iTunes. Go to iTunes and save a backup of your phone's data to your computer by selecting Back Up Now. Then choose to Restore iPhone. And lastly, Restore Backup.

Stronger dollar = more travelAmericans are traveling abroad again-and they have a stronger U.S. dollar to thank. That's right: The U.S. dollar is the strongest it's been against the euro in four years, and is gaining on other foreign currencies. The euro fell by 1.2 percent against the dollar to $1.1864, marking its weakest level since March 2006. Russia's ruble was the biggest loser against the dollar, falling 46 percent in 2014, as it was weakened by U.S. and European sanctions and sliding oil prices. Conversely, a stronger U.S. dollar tends to curb overseas travel to the U.S. However, lower oil and gas prices allow U.S. travelers to hit the road more easily, which should mitigate some of the loss in overseas dollars.

California breaks ground on high-speed rail
California officials have broken ground on a $68 billion high-speed rail project. The state plans to connect Los Angeles with San Francisco in 2029. The trains will reach speeds of more than 200 miles per hour and will make the 390-mile trip between Los Angeles and San Francisco in fewer than three hours, or less than half the time of a typical drive. The groundbreaking was delayed by about two years because of slower-than-expected land acquisitions necessary for the route. Train travel between Los Angeles and San Francisco currently takes about 12 hours and includes a transfer between the Amtrak and Caltrain networks.
