Flight delays on the decline

The Washington Times -- the FAA's office of audit and evaluation inspector general found that the number of delays and cancellations has dropped dramatically since 2000, thanks to airlines scheduling fewer flights, airports improving their own infrastructure and--perhaps most surprising--better all-around weather.

Although scientists warn that climate change could cause traumatic weather patterns, the government audit found improving skies for airlines in the past decade or so, leading to a drop in the number of weather-related flight delays. Severe weather accounted for 30% of all flight delays in 2004, but that dipped to 16% in 2012.

The best improvement was in "extreme taxi times," when a plane sits on the runway for at least three hours. After the Transportation Department started imposing penalties in 2010, the number of extreme delays dropped from 1,630 in 2000 to 30 in 2012 - a 98% decrease. Other major changes include airlines simply adding more time to the projects duration of each flight, which builds in extra room to accommodate problems

THE GREAT ESCAPE
Some great winter cities to visit

Hot drinks, snowy slopes, frozen lakes and a bright sun? That's the kind of winter we can all wrap our mittens around. Here's some interesting winter cities:

Prague, Czech Republic: Snow-capped spires and cobblestone streets, a fairytale city that remains relatively tourist-free in the winter months. The turrets and Romanesque vaults  of the old town looks even prettier under a sheet of snow (see below). Romantic gas street lamps were recently reinstalled throughout the city center. Ask your agent to book you at the Four Seasons or Mandarin Oriental for exclusive VIP amenities.

Salzburg, Austria: Mozart, local delicacies and the city is at its most hospitable in winter, as squares transform into bustling markets, and candlelit taverns fill with skiers refueling on Teutonic comfort food. Ask your agent to book you at the Sacher Salzburg for exclusive VIP amenities.

Tromso, Norway: One of Norway's most beautiful cities and one of the world's best spots to see the Northern Lights. Don't miss the Polar, Tromso and Perspektivet Museums.

Amsterdam, Netherlands: In winter, Amsterdam's museums are empty, making it the time to visit attractions such as Rijksmuseum or the Anne Frank House. Children will love the spectacular performances at the Royal Carré Theatre. Ask your agent to book you at the Sofitel Legend Grand for exclusive VIP amenities.

Nagano, Japan: As a former Winter Olympics host city, Nagano is a great base for exploring nearby ski resorts. The natural hot springs on the outskirts are perfect after a day on the slopes (see Japanese Snow Monkey above). Beautiful, snow-covered Buddhist temples are worth checking out, as is the Togakushi Minzoku-kan folklore museum, which has a fascinating display about the ninjas who once trained there.

Reykjavík, Iceland:  Although Iceland's capital city is one of Europe's coldest spots, it has plenty of natural hot springs and outdoor geothermal swimming pools to warm up in (some of the best can be found in the Nauthólsvík area of the city). The annual Winter Lights Festival, which takes place in February, is a spectacular celebration of winter. Visitors can try their hand at a wide range of winter sports or skate on the city's Tjörnin pond and then enjoy a cozy coffee house.
