Pastor Doug Dye - Time to Dance

Last week I participated in a conference entitled "Growing the Church in the Power of the Holy Spirit," in Black Mountain, North Carolina.  It was a wonderful opportunity to invite and wait on our Lord to empower and fill me anew with the Holy Spirit.  I came away from the week refreshed by the Father's love, reinvigorated in the joy of Jesus's presence, and renewed by the Spirit.

The conference focused on the ways the Holy Spirit empowers the church to share the good news of Jesus's love and so contribute to the building of God's kingdom.  It used the metaphor of dancing to describe how we cooperate with the Holy Spirit to grow the church.  We join in a divine-human dance of cooperation with the Holy Spirit as we walk with our Lord.  Paul hints at this dance when in Galatians 5 he writes, "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit."

One of the impressions I took away from the conference was the realization that Chapel by the Lake is a dancing body.  Sometimes we're a bit awkward, sometimes we step on each other's toes; nevertheless, we long to dance with the Spirit.  I am tremendously grateful for this!

My hope and prayer is that we dance with even greater skill and joy.  I invite you to join me in praying, exploring, and yielding to the Holy Spirit in the dance of life in Jesus.  For as we cooperate and dance with the Spirit, the joy and beauty of life in Christ draws more people to Him.

I am blessed to be your pastor, Doug

I feel a bit like I'm starring at a pile of puzzle pieces.  You know the feeling when you open a new puzzle, and you dump all of the pieces out onto the table.  Then you flip the box top over which shows the picture you're trying to build?  That's sort of the feeling I have right now.

The summer is almost here.  Our ministry programs are wrapping up for the year.  And as I consider next Fall (which will be here before we know it), there are some unknowns.  Who is going to be teaching Sunday School?  Are we going to do something about Children's Church?  Is someone going to pick up the mantle for Roosters (the Wednesday Night Children's program)? What types of Adult opportunities does the community need?  Will there be more small groups needed next year?  And of course a new question, what is God doing with our Youth Program, as Jessica is going to be stepping away?  Lots of pieces to the puzzle of Discipleship!

As we look at our programming, there are lots of opportunities for investing.  Our Sunday Children's class rooms are pretty full.  We have youth showing up in swarms on Wednesdays.  The kids coming to Roosters are finding a place to belong and be known.  There are more and more young people in worship on Sundays at all three services. These are great signs...really good news!

In the past few weeks, we have made several mentions in the bulletin, as well as a letter sent home to families with children.  We talked about it extensively at the Annual Meeting in January.  So this may sound redundant, but I'm going to say it again, WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO MAKE THESE PROGRAMS GO.  If you have ever thought about teaching Sunday School, or if you might consider heading up the Rooster program next year, I'd love to talk to you about it!

If you haven't returned your children's flyer, please take a moment to fill that out and drop it off next Sunday at the Education Kiosk.  There are extra flyers there too.

Over the next several weeks, we will be putting the puzzle of Discipleship together.  Where does your piece fit?  Please pray and consider how you can be a part!

God Bless,
Pastor Matt

Having just celebrated Mother's Day, it seems appropriate to share this little vignette excerpted from a book I've recently been reading. I found it moving and powerfully encouraging, as well as humbling, and I hope the author will not mind if I share it.

"On a Mother's Day many years ago, my brother and I decided to celebrate the occasion by surprising our parents with breakfast in bed...They played along amiably with the game, remaining serenely in bed, thumbing through the paper and ignoring the sounds from the kitchen of glass shattering and grease fires being extinguished.

In due course my brother and I marched into their room bearing steaming plates of ten minute eggs, carbonized bacon, and biscuits that would challenge an apprentice stonemason. It was, our parents said as they wolfed it down, the most delicious breakfast they had ever eaten. Love, evidently, is a wonderful spice...

Even when Christian worship is at its best, it is much like that Mother's day breakfast. It is always the work of amateurs, people who do this for love, kids in the kitchen overcooking the prayers, half-baking the sermons, and crashing and stumbling through the responses on the way to an act of adoration."

"Serving with Gladness,"

Watch!

This was our take away word for May's CBTL Deacon Devotions.

One of our current watching is for celebrating our new babies. In preparation for these new ones that will join our Chapel By The Lake family, some have been very busy at quilting. Gifting the new baby with a handmade quilt accompanied by a rose and a blessing is one of the many activities your deacons do to serve our church family.

Martha Morris is our quilting mentor. She recently hosted a series of quilting instructional parties at her home where new baby quilts were lovingly made by deacons and friends.

Enjoy anticipating and watching with us for our newest CBTL family members!

And as always, your deacons appreciate your help in watching with us for any CBTL members' needs.

Nepal Earthquake Relief

People have been asking my wife, Justine Emerson, where they can send donations for relief efforts following the earthquakes in Nepal.   As many of you may know, Justine and I met and were married in Kathmandu, and lived there several years, working for the United Mission to Nepal.  Nepal is a difficult place to work, due to its lack of resouces, the lack of roads, the location of villages in remote mountainous areas, and the devastation caused by landslides.

The most effective relief agencies are likely to be  ones which are already established and working in the country. It is a little complicated to give directly to UMN,  but I do know that World Vision has an established program, with 200 staff based in Nepal,  and it is easy to donate via the World Vision website.  http://worldvision.org/NepalQuake

From our experience and from reports from friends still  living in Nepal,  we know that the Nepali people are amazingly resilient and that they will rebuild there lives, but they will need help from outside to replace the food stores buried beneath rubble and to rebuild their homes.

"A very small percentage of those in the church stand behind a pulpit...The actual leadership roster of the church includes disciples ministering in every arena of life , in business, law, medicine, education, the arts, sciences, government and religion. The objective of Jesus' church-growth strategy was not to build a sing, behemoth social institution with a limited set of ordained authorities. Instead, his Spirit was to be poured out on all flesh to effect a widening, deepening base of influence within every nation, worldview, and social institution."
