Florida Watercolor Society
2015 Convention and Trade Show

Fig. 1  Joanna Coke demonstrating watercolor techniques in our booth with Mission Gold watercolors.
Martin F. Weber Co. was fortunate to make its fourth appearance at Florida Watercolor Society's Annual Convention, working in tandem with Keeton's Art Supply.  The convention was held at St. Petersburg's Marriott Clearwater from Sept 28th - Oct 4th, 2015.  The show floor was small but well-trafficked, creating a friendly but bustling atmosphere.  Many prominant artists--such as Joanna Coke (fig. 1), Jaimie Cordero, Elaine Charney, Sue Allen, Diane Simon and Pat Weaver (fig. 2)--visited our booth to demonstrate their signature techniques for eager audiences.

We also featured several new products, including two exciting developments from Mission Gold Watercolors:  the Pure Pigment and Perfect Pan sets.  The Mission Gold Perfect Pan Set is packaged in a slim 288 x 77 x 28 (mm) palette and comes with 24 interchangeable 2 mL pans.  The Mission Gold Pure Pigment Set comprises 24 single-pigment colors in 15 mL tubes, with two additional 7 mL tubes (Ivory Black and Chinese White).  This set pairs perfectly with the Mijello Studio Palette, and includes a mixing guide to create an additional 26 colors.  The Studio Palette is a spacious, del

uxe watercolor palette with 55 total wells (traditional slants, extra-wide slants and corners).  Also present for the first time at this show were our new decorative matte acrylics, Prima-flo, which can be used straight from the tube due to a lower viscosity.

This year, Mission Gold opaque and single-pigment colors were a hit!  Mijello Fusion palettes were also immensely popular for their set-up, which separates wells on one side and mixing areas on the other, preventing colors from running together when closed. We are very pleased with the results of the event and look forward to another successful year!
Allegory of the Modern Pilgrim

Our resident artist, Karen Clawson (fig. 1), recently premiered her one-woman exhibition: Allegory of the Modern Pilgrim.  The multi-media show is thematically centered upon mankind's innate urge to explore our surrounding

world and features portraiture, landscapes and other signifiers of "life's extraordinary nuances."

She interspersed oil paintings, watercolors, ink prints and three-dimensional mixed-media throughout the gallery to share a carefully crafted statement about human nature.  Several of her paintings highlighted in the exhibition (figs. 2 - 4) are pictured below.

The back wall was reserved for photographs capturing everything from breathtaking Mesoamerican stepped pyramids to lively street musicians.  Opening night included hors d'oeuvres, a live string quartet and the artist's generous decision to donate all proceeds to the Plymouth Community Arts Council.  The exhibition ran throughout the month of October.  To learn more about the artist and her work, visit her website at http://www.karenclawson.com

Anne Abgott
Fig. 1  Anne Abgott teaching watercolor painting

Watercolor artist, Anne Abgott (fig. 1), had originally been trained in oil and later jumped into the vibrant world of watercolor when she moved to Florida in 1998.  Anne began to teach watercolor and compete in International shows.  She also wrote a best selling book and made 3 DVD's during that time period.  Anne notes that "I had long ago set some goals for myself, my bucket list you might say, primarily the AWS, NWS signature status.  In 2013 I was lucky enough to achieve these goals, and continued to paint but not with the excitement and the thrill it once had for me. I realized something was missing and took a good look at what was happening in today's art world. The computer was being used by many artists in intriguing and interesting ways. So I hired someone to take the fear and loathing I had for the machine away."

Anne began taking images ( some very old) and manipulating them, coming up with exciting results that put the fire back into her painting. These images had a WOW factor that she felt was missing from her compositions and paintings.

Anne has spent the past couple of years working with her enhanced images and with opaque watercolors.  The paintings she's created via her new process and technique have been successful for her both in competitions and sales.  Anne paints with Mission Gold Watercolors, which are premier watercolors featuring intense, vibrant, beautiful colors with outstanding light fastness, transparency and purity of color.  Anne expressed that "Mission watercolors have some beautiful tube grays.  I began experimenting by adding transparent watercolor to tint the tube grays and mixing paints by using opaque white watercolor.  I am very excited to say that I will be explaining and demonstrating this NEW Anne in 3 DVD's coming soon with Martin F.Weber Co. I intend to take you through the steps of computer enhancement and the mixing and painting of the picture."

The three images that she will be painting her upcoming DVD's are pictured below (figs. 2 - 4).  To learn more about Anne Abgott, her artwork or her upcoming class schedule, visit her website at
