Many of you may remember John Sebastian and his American rock band from the 1960's,
The Lovin' Spoonful. This past March I attended a solo concert by John here on Kauai. It was fun hearing him sing many of his hits such as
Do You Believe in Magic, Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind, You Didn't Have to Be So Nice, Daydream, and
Welcome Back, the theme song from
Welcome Back, Kotter.

Why am I bringing this up now?
One of the fun things I've been doing recently is jamming on the beach with some of the best musicians here on Kauai. We play for a wonderful organization called
Kauai Ocean Recreation Experience, or KORE during their monthly "beach day." KORE is "designed to help both Kauai residents and their families who are physically

challenged and/or have special needs, to get back into the ocean with the assistance of trained professionals." We play about 3 hours of music to entertain the 100-or-so volunteers and participants each month. Since most of us are aging baby boomers, we tend to play a lot of music from the 1950s to the 1970s, such as the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Bob Marley, and more.
Last month, one of the songs we played was a Lovin' Spoonful hit,
Rain on the Roof. One of the guitar players said he chose it because there's a YouTube video of John Sebastian playing it on the harp. So, of course, I had to check it out.
I was amazed about two things:
#1 there was a lever harp in a video from 1966, and
#2 he is playing the harp backwards!!!!
Check it out and have a chuckle.
(Once you get past the introduction, you'll actually see him playing the harp!)
