The Harp: Special Exhibition
From now through September 30, 2013 there is an excellent exhibition of historical harps at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, California, in northern San Diego county. This exhibition, entitled "The Harp: A Global Story of Man, Music & Medicine" was curated by harpist and historical harp expert Nancy Hurrell. I was honored when Nancy personally invited me to the grand opening reception of the exhibition on March 22nd. I was extremely impressed by the wonderful display she and the museum have created.
A harp concert series is also being presented with a stellar line-up of harpists. Yolanda Kondonassis was the first performer on March 23. Upcoming concerts are: Elena Mashkovtseva on April 27 Isabelle Moretti on June 22 Deborah Henson-Conant on June 26 Grainne Hambly and William Jackson on July 27 Alfredo Rolando Ortiz on August 17 James Makubuya playing African harp on September 14
If you are anywhere in the southern California area, I highly recommend you attend the exhibition, and these outstanding concerts. Click these links for more information. Concert tickets: MuseumOfMakingMusic.org./events
In conjunction with the performance series and exhibit, the museum has developed a community-outreach program, "Harps In The City," that will bring hand-painted HarpsiclesŪ to different locations throughout Carlsbad. Illustrated by local artists, these instruments will be on display as objects of delight and curiosity to residents, and will serve as an enticement to the Museum of Making Music harp exhibit. Children from the Carlsbad Boys & Girls Clubs will have the chance to learn and create music with beginner-friendly HarpsiclesŪ during special educational sessions with harp teachers throughout the months of March and April. The harp lessons will culminate in performances for seniors at local retirement communities. The "Harps In the City" program is funded in part by a grant made possible by The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation. |
Review-It Winner
This month's Review-It Winner is Pam Hahn from Phoenix, Arizona, for her review of Paul Baker's The Tranquil Harp CD. Here's her review: "I just came from a massage and was reminded that I had gifted my massage therapist with this CD some months ago. It was playing this morning, and I was doubly relaxed by this calming, beautiful CD. My therapist says many of her clients comment on how wonderful Paul's gentle music is!" Here's what Pam told us about herself. "I've been playing the harp since I was 10, starting lessons with my mom, Molly Hahn. Many, many years later, I am now the principal harpist with the Chandler Symphony Orchestra in Arizona, and playing whatever other gigs that come up. To keep the kinks at bay, I get a massage every 3 weeks and enjoy Paul's beautiful CD - a gift to my therapist. That's comfort on every level!" - Pam All of Paul Baker's CDs and cassette tapes are on sale at harpcenter.com through April 30, 2013. To get the 15% discount enter the code word showers in the Promo Code box on your shopping cart page and click "Enter Code".
