Olympics Benefits Programs
In July 1996 after falling and hurting her ankle on the first vault, Kerri Strug got back up then asked coach Bela Karolyi, "Do we need this?" Karolyi replied, "Kerri we you to go one more time. We need you one more time for the gold." Strug limped slight to the beginning of the runway and stuck the landing on her second attempt. This courageous second vault helped the underdog Americans win the Olympic gold medal in team gymnastics over the favored Russians. I was lucky, for I won a lottery to buy tickets, and fortunate to take my Dad and witness this peak moment in sports. The electricity from the crowd was unreal, and thousands of spectators cried tears of joy. This was the highlight of the Atlanta games, and the Hollywood writers could not have dreamed of such an amazing script.
Although thrilling and exciting, the Olympics present the fitness industry and spectators much more than entertainment.
A big challenge in fitness is getting people motivated to train. Research, promote and share Olympian bios. Some of their stories are incredible and the Paralympic athletes are particularly motivational.
Another concern for Fitness Professionals is getting clients to adhere to training programs. As with the Olympics encourage people to exercise as part of a small group or team. You can develop a point system for various accomplishments and show how their actions benefit their team. Like the Olympics, show numerous fitness disciplines to try and enjoy. This is important, for people are more apt to continue exercise programs they truly like.
See if someone knows an Olympian. As part of a lunch invite an Olympian or world-class athlete to speak at a wellness presentation. Besides members, invite prospective members and people in the community to promote the club.
Clubs can develop their own junior Olympic events with programs that combine skills in golf, swimming and tennis. Have an awards ceremony that serves food and beverage, and create your own medals. Recognize your members' achievements, and put them on the podium. When you do, you too are a gold medalist!
