Tree City USA
Arbor Day Celebration
For the 20th consecutive year, the City of Verona has been given the Tree City USA award by the National Arbor Day Foundation. We will celebrate this special event with a luncheon at the Senior Center on Arbor Day, which is Friday, April 24th. The Tree City USA award is given annually to communities who demonstrate a commitment to the care, management and growth of the urban forest. Verona has met or exceeded the criteria for the award since the establishment of our Urban Forestry program in 1994.
The Urban Forestry program began with the founding of a City Tree Board and the completion of our first Urban Forestry Management Plan in 1994. The following year the City started planting street trees in all new subdivisions and a separate Forestry Fund was set up to fund the costs of planting and maintenance. Since that time, the City has planted over 2,000 new trees along streets throughout Verona and the current tally of publicly owned trees is nearly 5,000. As the program continues to grow with the Community, we look forward to several more years of being designated as one of Wisconsin's longest established Tree Cities.
