UA Launches Online Hub for Water Information: UA Water Network

At the University of Arizona (UA), more than 250 faculty and researchers specialize in topics related to water with expertise ranging from the social sciences and public policy to civil engineering, biology, and environmental chemistry. To raise awareness about UA's water focus and to foster connections between faculty, students, businesses, and governments, the UA Water Sustainability Program has developed a new Water Network web portal.

Organized along five themes, the UA Water Network highlights the many ways faculty and researchers in UA departments, programs, institutes, and centers are tackling complex water issues. You can use the site to gain a cohesive understanding of the UA's water research and the water issues being faced in the Southwest and around the world. The site features engaging videos and an events calendar that compiles water-related seminars, brown bags, and colloquiums occurring across campus. In addition, the site includes a detailed expertise directory that is searchable by topic, person, or department and numerous links for students and researchers.

Audio Coverage of Nov. 6 CAP-WRRC Community Water Forum Now Available

Audio coverage of the Nov. 6 community forum, "Sustainable Water for Southern Arizona: Current Conditions and Future Prospects," is now available on the UA Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) website. The event, held at the Leo Rich Theatre, was organized by the Central Arizona Project (CAP) and the WRRC.

The program featured an opening speech by Lisa Atkins, President of the CAP Board of Directors, a keynote address by Tom Buschatzke, Director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources, and a panel moderated by Sharon B. Megdal, Director of the WRRC.

Contact us to Launch Conserve2Enhance in Your Community Today

Conserve2Enhance (C2E) is a municipal water conservation program that is making an effort to link municipal water conservation with environmental benefits.

In total, C2E participants have conserved over 7.4 million gallons of water and invested over $70,000 in community-identified project sites that enhance local washes, reduce flooding, and increase wildlife habitat.

We foresee C2E as having an even more potent role in community-wide water conservation with increasing use of the C2E Water Use Dashboard. The Dashboard provides a way for the public to track their water use over time, as well as make donations to local projects through a linked Paypal account.

WRRC Associate Director Jean McLain Addressed Synergy in Science Meeting

On Nov. 17, Jean McLain presented "Addressing the Natural Antibiotic Resistome in Studies of Soil Resistance" at the 2015 Synergy in Science Conference, a joint meeting of the Soil Science Society of America, the Crop Science Society of America, the Agronomy Society of America, and the Entomological Society of America.

The presentation was part of a session convened by McLain and Kim Cook, her colleague at the USDA-ARS in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The session, Soils as the New Frontier for Antibiotic and Antibiotic Resistance Discovery, brought together world-renowned researchers to discuss novel scientific studies being conducted to better understand the natural levels of antibiotic resistance in the environment and the fate and transport of specific types of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance through soil.

ADEQ Brown Bag on Patterns and Trends in Municipal Water Demand

Municipal water demand, measured in usage per household, has been declining across Arizona and the Southwest for more than 20 years. Rates of decline have repeatedly outstripped projections, creating challenges for water and wastewater providers.

Gary Woodard, Senior Water Policy and Economics Consultant for Montgomery & Associates in Tucson, will examine that issue in depth at an Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Southern Regional Office (SRO) brown bag on Dec. 14. The brown bag will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m at SRO headquarters, 400 West Congress, Room 158. Woodard's presentation is titled "If You Build It, Will They Flush? An Update on Patterns and Trends in Municipal Demand."
