2016 Land & Water Summit

Thursday, November 12
Speaker: Doug Bennett, Conservation Manager, Southern Nevada Water Authority
Time/Location: 12:00 - 1:15 p.m. / WRRC Sol Resnick Conference Room (350 N. Campbell)

"Yes, it seems silly to have a city in the middle of a desert. But cities aren't centrally planned decisions: Las Vegas exists, frankly, because we like it there. Ten percent of Americans visit every year, and the population has tripled since 1990."
─ Charles Fishman, Author of The Big Thirst

At our November 12 seminar, Doug Bennett will discuss how Las Vegas reacted to the drought "wake up call" of 2002. His community changed its resource strategy from one that primarily relied upon the Colorado River to provide surplus water, to one that makes conservation the cornerstone. The results? Despite the drought, southern Nevada has stored hundreds of thousands of acre feet of water for future use.

WRRC Receives Grant for Developing Survey on Groundwater Governance and Management

The University of Arizona (UA) Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) is proud to announce it has received a grant from the Ground Water Research and Education Foundation for a 15-month project to develop and implement an in-depth survey about groundwater governance and management.

The project, "A Survey of Groundwater Governance and Management: Strategies, Challenges, and Opportunities Connected to Water Quality" aims to identify on-the ground practices that may help improve and enhance management of the nation's finite water supplies, with a focus on groundwater quality.

The project team will be led by Sharon B. Megdal, WRRC Director, and Andrea Gerlak, Director of Academic Development with the International Studies Association and Policy Associate with the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy. The project creates an opportunity for a student, who is also a future groundwater practitioner, to have early exposure to groundwater management challenges and successes in practice.

WRRC and Beyond the Mirage Participate in 107th Arizona Town Hall

The 107th Arizona Town Hall, "Keeping Arizona's Water Glass Full," will be held Nov. 15-18 in Mesa, AZ. For over 50 years, Arizona Town Hall has been the neutral facilitator of state-wide forums that bring diverse Arizonans together for three days of discussion and consensus-building. This year, the discussion topic is water and its relation to other aspects of the economy and society. Recommendations for solutions and next steps will be published following the Town Hall and available on the Arizona Town Hall website. WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal and Asst. Director Susanna Eden were authors and editors on the background report prepared by Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and the UA.

Winner of the New Arizona Prize: Water Consciousness Challenge, Beyond the Mirage, will be featured at the Tuesday, Nov. 17 luncheon at the Town Hall.

WRRC Director Discusses Israel's Water Lessons for Arizona in Op-ed Article

In her Arizona Republic op-ed, WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal discusses her recent trip to Israel for the Water Technology & Environment Control (WATEC) Exhibition & Conference and what she thinks Arizona can learn from Israel on water use and management.

The article, "My Turn: Israel's water lesson for Arizona," discusses the desalination technology and public private partnerships that made much of Israel's seawater desalination possible.

Megdal was an invited speaker at WATEC 2015, which brought together Israeli and international business executives, water utility engineers, political decision makers, and leading researchers to showcase the most advanced technologies and water-use solutions from around the world.
