"Drought and Sustainable Water Management in California: Behind the Scenes," a lecture by Lester Snow

On Monday, October 19, Lester Snow, Executive Director of the California Water Foundation, will speak at the University of Arizona (UA) about drought in California: how it is not the worst of the state's woes, but rather has exposed fundamental weaknesses in how the state manages its water. According to Snow, without major and permanent changes now, no amount of rain this winter will fix the situation in the long term.

Snow will also provide a behind-the-scenes view of what it took to get new groundwater legislation passed in California, along with his perspective on why it is important, challenges for its implementation, and how it connects to California's broader commitments to climate change adaptation and mitigation.

The lecture will be held at the Haury Lecture Hall (room S107) of the new ENR2 Building (1064 E. Lowell St.) at 3:00 p.m. It is co-sponsored by the Center for Climate Adaptation Science and Solutions, the Water Resources Research Center (WRRC), and the UA Dept. of Soil, Water and Environmental Science.

Water RAPIDS Participates in Desert LCC Workshop in Mexico

Last week, Water RAPIDS (Water Research and Planning Innovations for Dryland Systems) team members Kelly Mott Lacroix (Senior Research Analyst) and Elia Tapia (Graduate Research Assistant) traveled to Aguascalientes, Mexico to share the current status of the Environmental Flows Database project with colleagues and researchers at a Desert Landscape Conservation Cooperative (Desert LCC) workshop. The project is a partnership between the WRRC and Northern Arizona University. It is a database of environmental flow needs and responses to help water and land managers make decisions about water for riparian and aquatic species and ecosystems.

Kelly and Elia were also part of the facilitation team helping with conversations about large-scale conservation projects for a group of over 40 workshop participants.
