Arizona Governor Doug Ducey to Attend International Water Conference in Israel 

Next month, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey is heading to Israel to attend the Water Technology & Environment Control (WATEC) Exhibition & Conference, Oct. 13-15. WATEC 2015 will bring together Israeli and international business executives, water utility engineers, political decisions makers, and leading researchers to showcase the most advanced technologies and water-use solutions from Israel and around the world. This year's theme is "Wisdom in Every Drop." 
Governor Ducey will be accompanied by Arizona Department of Water Resources Director (ADWR) Tom Buschatzke and is scheduled to speak during the opening ceremonies on October 13. 

Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) Director, Sharon B. Megdal, will speak later that day about "Efforts to Close the Gap between Water Supply and Demand in the Colorado River Basin in the Western United States." Dr. Megdal will also be speaking on "Mechanisms for Transboundary Cooperation at the United States-Mexico Border" at the Pre-WATEC Special Water Issues Conference, Oct. 12. 

Two other speakers from Arizona will give talks the second day of the 2015 WATEC. Clinton Williams, lead research soil scientist for USDA Agricultural Research Service in Maricopa, AZ, will talk about "Reclaimed Municipal Wastewater: New water in the Western United States" and Trevor Hill, CEO of FATHOM, a software as-a-service company in Phoenix, AZ, will talk about "Smart Cities: From Risk to Opportunity."

RNRF Congress to Assess Challenges of Managing Water in Western States

The Renewable Natural Resources Foundation (RNRF) is holding a Congress on Sustaining Western Water on Dec. 1-2, 2015, at the American Geophysical Union Conference Center in Washington, DC. RNRF congress delegates will assess the challenges of managing scarce water resources within the economic and regulatory framework of the western states. The congress will feature discussion of methods and opportunities to sustain water resources including water transfers, land-use policy tools, and future scenario planning. 

One of the featured speakers is WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal, who will talk about "Sustainable Water Use in the Arid Southwest" on Dec. 1.


Future Leaders Town Hall Keynote to be Presented by Kelly Mott Lacroix 

On Wednesday, October 21st, WRRC Senior Analyst Kelly Mott Lacroix will deliver the keynote address at the Future Leaders Town Hall on "Keeping Arizona's Water Glass Full." 

The program is organized by the Arizona Town Hall, in partnership with Maricopa Community Colleges and others.
It will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Mesa Community College Library, Room 145 (LB 145), and satellite locations throughout the state (to be announced). 

It is a unique opportunity for university, college, and high school students to gather and craft solutions that will change Arizona. It is a free program and all students are welcome. 


WRRC Bids Farewell to Outreach Coordinator Brittany Xiu 

This month, the WRRC says goodbye to the very talented and energetic Brittany Xiu. Brittany has been an integral part of the Center, first as a Graduate Research Assistant and then as the Outreach Coordinator for the Water RAPIDS (Water Research and Planning Innovations for Dryland Systems) program. Among other tasks, Brittany brilliantly divided her time between directing the Conserve2Enhance water conservation program and conducting statewide outreach and engagement activities on water management and policy. 

Brittany holds a M.S. in Soil and Water Science and a B.S. in Environmental Science, both from the University of Arizona.

WRRC Welcomes New Employee: Georgine Speranzo 

This month, Georgine Speranzo will join the staff at the WRRC as Administrative Associate. 

Georgine will provide quality and responsive support for the WRRC Administration with specific duties to the Director, Sharon B. Megdal. She will also oversee day-to-day management at the Center. 

Georgine has worked at the University of Arizona for 17 years. She holds two B.A. degrees, one in French (minor in English) and one in Linguistics (minor in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences).


Water RAPIDS and AEC to Hold Community Water Conversations in Globe

Along with many other Arizona communities, the Globe-Miami area faces complex challenges in balancing their water supply and infrastructure with current and future demands. Addressing these challenges, the WRRC Water RAPIDS team and Arizona Cooperative Extension (AEC) will be holding Community Conversations at local Globe-Miami gathering spots to help residents better understand their water supply and system issues. 

Made possible through a Freeport-McMoran grant, these six educational meetings will be held in the Fall and Spring of 2015-2016. A community project based on the main concerns of residents will be conducted as follow up.


UA's Cody Sheehy Nominated for an Emmy Award

Cody Sheehy, videographer and leader of the WRRC-CALS-AZPM Beyond the Mirage project team was nominated for an Emmy for his documentary "Earthlight", by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), Rocky Mountain chapter. Each year, NATAS recognizes outstanding work in over 90 television, production and creative communications categories. Winners will be announced at a gala event on Oct. 17 in Scottsdale, Arizona. 

The Beyond the Mirage project raises water awareness through a web experience that encourages users to explore hundreds of video clips, construct their own documentaries on line, and share them with family, friends, and followers. The project also includes a feature length documentary and educational outreach.

Abstract Submission Deadline Extended: UA Environmental Grad Blitz

The abstract submission deadline for the UA's Institute of the Environment (IE) 2015 Environmental Grad Blitz has been extended to Sept. 29. 

The Grad Blitz brings together graduate students working on environment-related research and arts to showcase their research findings and creative works.
The event provides a special opportunity for students to share their work with other students, faculty, university administrators, and others. 

$200 will be awarded for the best presentation and best poster in both the research and artistic categories. $100 will be awarded to the presentations and posters receiving honorable mention.
