Save-the-Date: Sustainable Water for Southern Arizona: Current Conditions and Future Prospects, Nov. 6, 2015
The Central Arizona Project and the University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) invite you to save the date on Friday, November 6, 2015 from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for " Sustainable Water for Southern Arizona: Current Conditions and Future Prospects," an important regional discussion about our most critical natural resource and its impact on our economy, environment, and way of life.
The discussion, to be held at the Leo Rich Theater at the Tucson Convention Center, is hosted in partnership with the Southern Arizona Leadership Council and the Southern Arizona Water Users Association and is free and open to the public.
Registration and additional information will be available in late September.

Article Discusses Groundwater Governance Across Nation A recent article published in Groundwater journal discusses observations on groundwater governance across the nation. The article, "Groundwater Governance in the U.S.: Common Priorities and Challenges," was co-authored by WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal, visiting Assistant Professor at the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy (UCSPP) Andrea K. Gerlak, UCSPP Deputy Director Robert Varady, and former WRRC Graduate Research Assistant Ling-Yee Huang.
It introduces the methods and findings of a nationwide survey developed to query state agency officials about the extent and scope of groundwater use, groundwater laws and regulations, and groundwater tools and strategies; and it discusses significant observations on the national governance framework.

Project WET to Facilitate Teacher Workshop at 2015 AHS Symposium
The workshop will be held Thursday, September 17 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Desert Willow Conference Center in Phoenix, AZ.
It will offer professional development that evolves teachers' instructional practice and water related content mastery through real-world and relevant learning about the Colorado River management system. Teachers will also have the opportunity to attend the plenary session and hear the luncheon speaker as they dine with conference attendees.

ARC Annual Meeting to Focus on Assessing and Restoring Riparian Habitat
On October 15-16, the Arizona Riparian Council (ARC) will host their annual meeting at the High Country Conference Center in Flagstaff, AZ. Topics include tools to understand riparian ecology, genetic approaches to restoration, monitoring irrigation and soil properties, and LIDAR imagery to assess habitat suitability.
WRRC Senior Research Analyst Kelly Mott Lacroix, who is Vice-president of the ARC, is a member of the planning committee for the meeting and will be presenting on the Water RAPIDS environmental flows database. The database contains 400 articles that describe the water needs of riparian and aquatic ecosystems across the deserts of the United States and Mexico.

CANCELLED: WSP Distinguished Speaker David Palumbo
The Water Sustainability Program (WSP) presentation o n the Navajo Generating Station and related Native American affairs by distinguished speaker David Palumbo has been cancelled due to a schedule conflict. The presentation was planned for Monday, October 26 at 4:00 p.m.
We thank you for your interest and apologize for any inconvenience. The WSP is currently working on rescheduling this presentation.

Drought and Sustainable Water Management in California - Lester Snow
Monday, Oct. 19, the Center for Climate Adaptation Science and Solutions, the WRRC, and the UA Department of Soil, Water and Environmental Science are co-hosting a presentation on "Drought and Sustainable Water Management in California: Behind the Scenes" by Lester Snow, Executive Director of the California Water Foundation.
The lecture will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the Haury Lecture Hall of the ENR2 building. Snow will speak about drought in California: how it is not the worst of the state's woes, but rather has exposed fundamental weaknesses in how the state manages its water.

Free Webinar: Benchmarking Water and Wastewater Rates in AZ
A free 60-minute interactive webinar is being held on Sept. 24, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., to introduce Arizona's revised and expanded 2015 online Water and Wastewater Rates Dashboard and provide information about metrics for sustainable rates and finances.
The webinar is being presented by the Environmental Finance Center at UNC Chapel Hill in partnership with the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona (WIFA) as part of WIFA's annual Water and Wastewater Residential Rates Survey project.

SRP 3rd Annual Healthy Forest, Vibrant Economy Conference
The Salt River Project (SRP) is holding its 3rd Annual Healthy Forests, Vibrant Economy Conference on Oct. 7-8, 2015 at the DoubleTree Resort in Scottsdale, AZ. This two-day event is a convergence of business leaders, government partners, scientists, researchers, and those with an interest in forest health.
Topics will include the success of ongoing restoration efforts, forest health and its impact on state resources, building support for forest health projects, future threats, and moving forward with restoration at an accelerated pace.
