The Water Resources Research Center Releases 2014 Annual Report

The University of Arizona (UA) Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) is pleased to announce the release of its 2014 Annual Report, now available at http://wrrc.arizona.edu/annual-report-2014. The Annual Report contains a summary of activities undertaken by the WRRC during the 2014 calendar year. It highlights the WRRC's innovative programs, effective educational strategies, cutting-edge water quality laboratory research, valued outreach to multiple publics, and meaningful student involvement. A unit of the UA College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Arizona Cooperative Extension, the WRRC has a unique position as an independent source of objective information and analysis on water. In 2014 the WRRC celebrated its 50th anniversary as the Arizona's designated water resources research institute under the federal Water Resources Research Act of 1964. With a mission to promote understanding of critical state and regional water management and policy issues through research, outreach, education, and engagement, the WRRC focuses on program impacts. New and continuing programs are contributing knowledge and fostering broad-based engagement in the development of solutions to water issues.
Metrics of our progress toward strategic goals can be found in Appendix A. Supplemental information on accomplishments can be found in Appendix B.
Living with Less Water Conference Report Released

The Institute on Science for Global Policy (ISGP) has released the final report for its Living with Less Water Conference convened in partnership with the Tucson Working Group. The conference, held in Tucson on February 20-21, 2015, brought together internationally credible scientists, policy makers and citizens to discuss climate and water issues in Tucson and Southern Arizona. It featured debates of concise policy position papers and extended caucus discussions among attendees.
The report contains the policy position papers presented at the conference including "Water Resource Management Challenges in a Time of Changing Climate," by Water Resources Research Center Director Sharon B. Megdal. The report also contains debate summaries, conference conclusions, and actionable next steps relevant to climate issues in Tucson and Southern Arizona.
Overall, the conference focused on linking scientifically credible information to the formulation and implementation of sound, effective local policies. Water Sustainability Program Director, Claire Zucker, a participant of the workshop, noted that "Meetings such as this one, that foster dialogue between climate and water scientists and interface with the business, government, and citizen sectors are key to developing future water-smart policies".

Landscape Conservation Planning and Design Workshops

On August 4-6, 2015, the Landscape Conservation Planning and Design Workshops will be held in Tucson, AZ. WRRC Senior Research Analyst, Kelly Mott Lacroix, will be presenting work on an environmental flows database intended to help water and land managers make decisions about water for riparian and aquatic species and ecosystems. The WRRC's Water Research And Planning Innovations for Dryland Systems (Water RAPIDS) program, in partnership with Northern Arizona University, has embarked on a Desert Landscape Conservation Cooperative-wide database of environmental flow needs and responses with information collected from the Chihuahuan, Mojave, and Sonoran deserts of the United States and Mexico.
