WRRC 2015 Annual Conference
Indigenous Perspectives on Sustainable Water Practices
Date/Location: June 9-10, 2015 / Wild Horse Pass Hotel & Casino,Chandler, Arizona
Theme:"Indigenous Perspectives on Sustainable Water Practices." This year, the Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) is partnering with the Gila River Indian Community to increase awareness of water sustainability efforts on tribal lands and to provide new perspectives in the discussion of water management options to meet growing supply gaps in Arizona.
Last year's WRRC annual conference, "Closing the Gap Between Water Supply and Demand," attracted 350 attendees from all over Arizona and beyond. Arizona Public Media's Arizona Week program featured the 2014 conference and explored the issue of closing the water supply-demand gap through interviews with the Central Arizona Project and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. Tucson C2E Now Accepting Applications for 2015 C2E Grant Program
The Tucson Conserve2Enhance (C2E) Program is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for its 2015 C2E Grant Program. Each year C2E awards a small number of grants to local neighborhoods and organizations to enhance washes and riparian areas throughout Tucson. This funding comes from Tucson Water customer bill donations and C2E participants. Nearly 900 individuals donated to C2E in 2014 to make this grant program possible!
A grant workshop will be held Wednesday, March 4th from 5:00-6:30 p.m. at the Ward 6 Community Room (3202 E. 1st St., Tucson). Please RSVP here and come learn about the C2E Program and how your neighborhood or organization can apply for funding. Grants will be awarded in the range of $2,500-$7,500 and applications are due Monday, April 13th, 2015.

Save-the-Date: 2015 Low Impact Development Workshop April 9-10 Plan the future course of low impact development efforts in our region and celebrate successes at the Low Impact Development Workshop, April 9-10, co-organized by a host of local organizations including PAG, Pima County, City of Tucson, Watershed Management Group, the University of Arizona and more. The workshop will be held at the Tucson Electric Power Co., 88 E. Broadway Blvd., Tucson. The first day will be filled with presentations and discussion of case studies, technical guidance, regulations and policy, cost effectiveness, community benefits, and research studies, followed by open discussion on next steps. The second day, an interactive field experience led by Watershed Management Group, will engage participants in learning best practices, design successes, and lessons from LID implementation and maintenance. WRRC Student Spotlight: SNRE Graduate Student Ling-Yee Huang
Ling-Yee Huang is a second year master's degree student in the Water, Society, and Policy program of the School of Natural Resources and the Environment. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology from Rice University and received a law degree from the University of Florida. At the WRRC, Huang works as a Graduate Research Assistant for Director Sharon B. Megdal on groundwater governance. Prior to moving to Tucson, Huang worked as a policy analyst at the Center for Progressive Reform, an environmental and natural resources law and policy think tank in Washington, D.C. Her work focused on the Environmental Protection Agency's Chesapeake Bay Program, in particular analyzing and developing metrics for the Bay states' plans to improve water quality in the Bay watershedand to implement Total Maximum Daily Loads for local waterbodies. Environmental Implications of Unconventional Gas Extraction
On Feb. 17, Radisav D. Vidic from the University of Pittsburgh will deliver a seminar entitled "Environmental Challenges and Opportunities in Unconventional (Shale) Gas Extraction." Dr. Vidic will talk about water management alternatives and environmental implications of unconventional gas extraction (horizontal drilling, multi-stage hydraulic fracturing...). Hosted by the UA Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, the seminar will be held in ARCH (1040 N. Olive Road), Room 103.

Thomas Buschatzke Appointed Director of ADWR
In Jan. 2015, Governor Doug Ducey appointed Thomas Buschatzke as the new Director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR). Mr. Buschatzke has been serving as assistant director for ADWR's Water Planning Division since 2011. He has also served on University of Arizona's Water Resources Research Center External Advisory Committee and the Water Sustainability Program External Advisory Committee. Tom Buschatzke replaced Mike Lacey, director of the ADWR 2014-2015.

Honoring the Sacredness of Water: Native Youth-led Walk for Water
Saturday, March 7, 2015, take part in a 7.8 mile Native youth-led walk honoring the sacredness of water. The walk will begin at the San Xavier reservoir and end with a ceremony and a traditional lunch at the Wak Hik:dañ riparian area. Youth groups from various schools in the greater Tucson area will carry Sacred Water on a cleared path in the San Xavier District. Along the way, students will speak about water and blessings will be shared.

March 7, 2015: 8th Annual Salt River Project Water Conservation Expo
Join the Salt River Project for its 8th Annual Water Conservation Expo, Mar. 7, 2015, for an opportunity to talk with on-site landscape professionals and to learn about water-saving devices for the yard and home. Expo exhibits will provide information about water supplies, energy efficiency, water safety, and water conservation.
The Expo will also feature two classes on the benefits of "smart" irrigation controllers and xeriscape (low-water-use landscaping).
