Sharon B. Megdal Featured in Arizona Republic: What You Should Know About Arizona's Water Future
In an opinion piece for the Arizona Republic, Soak It In, Water Resources Research Center Director Sharon B. Megdal discusses what Arizonans should know about their water future. Water is scarce, but by staying informed, Arizonans can do their part to avert a crisis. Megdal urges people to find out where their water comes from and encourages them to keep up with water issues and talk to neighbors, friends, water providers and elected officials about what they need to do to ensure that Arizona's water glass stays full. The column also features a nine minute video on the Colorado River, written and produced by Central Arizona Project. "Challenged but Unbroken: Sustaining the Colorado River" addresses threats to the long-term viability of water deliveries and power generation in the Colorado River basin and compels all Colorado River water users to take action to ensure the sustainability of this vital resource. Read the full article here. Watch "Challenged but Unbroken: Sustaining the Colorado River" here.

Roadmap for Considering Water for Arizona's Natural Areas
In an effort to more deeply understand the relationship between existing water management and Arizona's riparian and aquatic ecosystems, the WRRC developed the Connecting the Environment to Arizona Water Planning project with funding from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust. The culmination of this project, the Roadmap for Considering Water for Arizona's Natural Areas, was released last month. It contains information on the current scientific understanding of water for natural areas, existing legal considerations for providing water to natural areas, examples of where natural areas are already included in water management decisions, and an overview of available paths forward for including natural areas alongside human uses.

Arizona Project WET Teams up with Town of Gilbert to Save Water and Money
In December, 120 Gilbert 6th grade students acted to conserve water while saving taxpayer's money with a hands-on learning assignment at Gilbert Civic Center. Settler's Point Elementary teamed up with Arizona Project WET (APW) to perform a water audit of municipal building faucets, replacing aerators with water-efficient ones. Students were able to quantify water savings by measuring the baseline flow rate and the flow rate after the new aerator installation. The students invested 4 hours in this project and based on estimated frequency and duration of use, saved the city of Gilbert 99,000 gallons of water per year. This total water savings will save the taxpayers $375 in water and sewer fees.
