USGS Recognizes WRRC for Its Outstanding Performance

Section 104 of the Water Resources Research Act (WRRA) of 1984 authorizes annual funding to support an institute for water resources research in each state at its land grant college or other designated university. Currently there are a total of 54 U.S. water institutes in the states and in Pacific islands. The Water Resources Research Act Program, administered by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the general guidance of the Secretary of the Interior, requires that each state's water resources research institute/center be evaluated every three years to determine its eligibility for continued support under the WRRA.

Based on the review performed for the 2008 to 2010 period by a committee convened by USGS, the University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) was recognized for "performing at an outstanding level." The WRRC was one of only eight institutes receiving an outstanding designation. Among other things, the USGS complimented the WRRC for the quality of its programs, its impact on public policy and water management, and for successfully addressing Arizona's water resources challenges.

"40 More Years!": SDWA's Celebrates Its 40th Birthday This Month

Dec. 16 marks the

40th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). The Act was first passed by Congress in 1974 to protect public health by regulating the nation's public drinking water supply. Since then, the act has been amended twice (1986 and 1996). The SDWA authorizes the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to set national health based standards for drinking water to protect against both naturally-occurring and man-made contaminants that may be found in drinking water.
