WRRC Staff Changes: Candice Rupprecht to Move to Tucson Water 

 

UA Water Resources Research Center's Applied Programs Coordinator, Candice Ruppercht, is moving to a new job at Tucson Water. Candice worked on the Water RAPIDS (Research and Planning Innovations for Dryland Systems) Team at the WRRC.
She also oversaw the Conserve to Enhance (C2E) program and worked on a project to develop a Sustainable Water Management Plan for the Town of Clarkdale, Ariz. As of Sept. 2014, Candice will begin working as a conservation specialist in the Strategic Initiatives Division at Tucson Water. Her primary responsibility will be to revamp Tucson Water's commercial conservation program. WRRC Research Analyst, Kelly Mott Lacroix will be taking over Candice's C2E responsibilities.

C2E in UANews: UA Program Promotes Smart Water Use in Ariz. & Beyond

UANews recognizes UA Water Resources Research Center's 
Conserve2Enhance (C2E) program for its efforts in helping Tucson residents save millions of gallons of water while investing $60,000 in local enhancement projects. C2E Program Coordinator, Brittany Xiu spoke to UA News contact, Shelley Littin, about the Tucson C2E program, how it works, water conservation tactics and more. The C2E program is the brainchild of WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal and a graduate student. C2E helps residents and businesses conserve water by tracking their water usage over time and putting their water savings to work to support enhancement projects.

New Arizona Prize: $100K Water Consciousness Challenge 

The New Arizona Prize is a philanthropic prize competition organized by the Arizona Community Foundation, Republic Media and Morrison Institute for Public Policy. Offering a prize of $100,000, the Water Consciousness Challenge will reward a strategy to raise the public's consciousness of the issue of water scarcity and Arizona's water future. Teams will propose a creative content strategy that relies primarily on digital mediums, with an emphasis on social share-ability. The competition is open to teams, and student teams as well as professionals from a range of disciplines are encouraged to compete.

APW Receives Funding for Pinal County Education Program

Arizona Project WET (APW) has once again received $50,000 in sponsorship for the 2014-2015 school-year from the Abbott Fund, APW's Founding Sponsor for the Pinal County Water Education Program.

Kerry Schwartz and Rick Gibson will be working with new APW Program Coordinator, Chuck Dugan to promote water stewardship and STEM literacy through direct student outreach that delivers or extends classroom learning and community engagement.

Call for Student Presentations: Sigma Xi 2014 Student Conference

 

Sigma Xi, an international, multidisciplinary research society, is holding its 2014 International Research Conference November 7-8 at the Renaissance Glendale Hotel and Conference Center in Glendale, Ariz. Students are invited to submit an abstract of their research for consideration to be presented as a student poster. Posters will be accepted in all fields of science and engineering and awards will be given for outstanding presentations.

The WRRC has released the Summer 2014 issue of its quarterly newsletter, the Arizona Water Resource (AWR). The latest edition of the AWR features articles on various water technologies. The Summer AWR also includes WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal's Public Policy Review column, "Complex Water Management Issues Require Thorough and Ongoing Dialogues."

Channel Your Inner Photographer and Win Cash Prize
 

One more month left to enter your best Arizona-specific shots for the WRRC 2014 Summer Photo Contest, "Catch the Rain," underway through Sept. 26. Photographers are asked to submit photos telling the story of Arizona's uncommon connection with the rain in two categories: "Catch and Reuse," and "Water in Nature." 
The photographer whose entry wins Best in Show will be awarded a $100 prize, and two Best of Category winning photographers will receive $75 each. Learn more, see photo examples, and submit your photos here.
