Thursday, July 10 Mike CrimminsPresentation: Dusty Dry to Sopping Wet? Summer & Fall Climate Outlook for Southern Arizona
Speaker: Mike Crimmins, UA Assoc. Professor & Extension Specialist -- Climate Science/SWES Time/Location: 12 - 1:30 p.m. (WRRC Sol Resnick Conference Room, 350 N. Campbell)
Mike Crimmins will provide an update on current drought conditions in Southern Arizona, as well as the prospects for any drought relief through the upcoming summer, fall and winter seasons. A developing El Nino event has the potential to impact both the upcoming monsoon season and cool season precipitation patterns later in the year. An update on near-real-time conditions in the Pacific Ocean as well as seasonal climate outlooks will also be covered in this presentation. Note: This presentation will also be webcast live via GoToMeeting.

CSA News Features Research of WRRC Assoc. Director Jean McLain
WRRC Associate Director Dr. Jean McLain was featured in the June 2014 issue of CSA News, a monthly publication for members of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America. Dr. McLain spoke with writer Ken Doyle about her research at the University of Arizona, which focuses on antibiotic resistance (AR) in recycled municipal wastewater. According to McLain, a number of studies have detected the presence of AR genes in recycled wastewater, though she cautioned that most studies do not take into account the levels of these genes naturally present in soil and water. New Book From UAPress Traces Environmental History of Santa Cruz River
UAPress recently released a new book tracing the environmental history of the Santa Cruz River in Southern Arizona. Requiem for the Santa Cruz River: An Environmental History of an Arizona River, by Bob Webb, Julio Betancourt, Roy Johnson and Ray Turner, commemorates the many casualties of unsustainable water development, including loss of groundwater levels high enough to form wetlands, and destruction of a Great Mesquite Forest full of bird life. Requiem carries a strong message about the consequences of unsustainable water development and the impracticalities of ecological restoration on fundamentally transformed rivers like the Santa Cruz. Available from UAPress.
