Early bird registration is just $100 through March 6 (after March 6, $125) and $35 for students. The conference will be held at the University of Arizona Student Union Memorial Center in Tucson, Ariz. 

 

The conference will kick off with an opening keynote address from Michael Lacey, Acting Director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR). Kay Brothers, Co-Chair of the Colorado River Basin Study Next Steps Working Group Coordination Team, will give a "Closing the Gap Basin-Wide" keynote address. The WRRC will also celebrate its 50th anniversary during the poster session at this year's conference.

Presentation: Phoenix's Water Supply Resiliency

Speaker: Kathryn Sorensen, Water Services Director, City of Phoenix  

Kathryn Sorensen will speak about Phoenix's relative lack of wells, which creates a very different picture of resiliency compared to Tucson water in both good and bad ways. She will also address how this is a good thing for long-term aquifer management, but is also a potential vulnerability during drought.

Speakers: Dave Grieshop & Tim Cervantes, TCWP
brief overview of a new NGO in Cochise County: The Cochise Water Project (TCWP) and its current and future programs. Learn how TCWP began, organized and developed its programs, and how it measures its effectiveness to ensure it is a good steward of the funding provided. 


WRRC Staff Hold NIWR Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

As President-Elect of the National Institutes of Water Resources (NIWR), WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal chaired the 2014 NIWR Annual Meeting earlier this week in Washington, D.C. Assisting her with the meeting were WRRC Assoc. Director Jean McLain, Jane Cripps and graduate student Nate Delano. The Feb. 10-12 meeting theme was, "Celebrating 50 Years of the WRRA and NIWR Partnerships." Attendees participated in workshops on developing partnerships, achieving legislative objectives, funding strategies and more. Dr. Megdal will assume the position of President of NIWR in October. Conserve to Enhance Program Highlighted on KXCI "Weekly Green"

The Sonoran Institute (SI) -- which works with the WRRC's Conserve to Enhance (C2E) program -- was mentioned last week on Tucson radio station KXCI's "Weekly Green" show. Ian Dowdy, Program Director for SI's Sun Corridor Legacy program, was the featured guest for the interview. Dowdy discussed the importance of environmental work in Southern Arizona, and mentioned C2E's unique water conservation efforts in Tucson.

Udall Center Fellows Program Issues 2014-15 Call for Applications 

 

The University of Arizona Udall Center for Public Policy issued a call this week for applications for its 2014-15 Fellows Program. Fellowships are open to full- and part-time UA faculty members, including research faculty. Fellowships will span one semester, and Fellows will study an aspect of public policy. Applications are due by 4 p.m. on March 28, 2014. Learn more and apply here.

 
Save the Date: WSP Distinguished Speaker Aaron Wolf (March 27)

 

The University of Arizona Water Sustainability Program (WSP) will host Oregon State University professor Aaron Wolf as the next guest in its Distinguished Speaker Series. Wolf is a professor of geography in the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at OSU. His field of research is the interaction between water science and policy, particularly the resolution and prevention of conflict. Learn more here.
