Speaker: Kathryn Sorensen, Water Services Director, City of Phoenix  


Kathryn Sorensen will speak about Phoenix's relative lack of wells, which creates a very different picture of resiliency compared to Tucson water in both good and bad ways. She will also address how this is a good thing for long-term aquifer management, but is also a potential vulnerability during drought.

Celebrate the WRRC's 50th Anniversary Next Friday at 10th Annual Chocolate Fest 

You're invited to join the Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) for a a celebration of its 50th Anniversary next Friday (Feb. 14) at the 10th Annual Chocolate Fest (3:30 - 5 p.m.). Held at the WRRC (350 N. Campbell Ave.), Chocolate Fest will include a live musical performance from Claire Zucker (Pima Association of Governments) and a wide variety of chocolate dishes from local kitchens and around the world. Co-sponsored by the UA Water Sustainability Program, this year's Chocolate Fest will include a special focus on WRRC history.

C2E Program Opens 2014 Community Enhancement Grant Applications

Applications for the Conserve to Enhance (C2E) program's 2014 Community Enhancement Grants are now being accepted. Community Enhancement projects should directly benefit a neighborhood's natural areas and waterways through preservation or restoration practices. Projects must also be consistent with C2E goals and located within Tucson Water's service area. Winning grants are generally funded in the range of $2,500-$7,500 (not to exceed $7,500). For more information or to submit an application, click here. The deadline to apply is April 11.


WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal Featured in Arizona Farm Bureau Newsletter

WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal was featured in this month's Arizona Farm Bureau newsletter. Julie Murphree interviewed Dr. Megdal for the article, "A Conversation With Another Water Expert: Sharon Megdal."

Dr. Megdal discussed a number of Arizona water issues, including water management, use and recharge of groundwater, environmental water needs, the WRRC's Conserve to Enhance (C2E) program, and much more.

Michael Lacey (ADWR) to Give Opening Keynote at WRRC Annual Conference

 

Michael Lacey, Acting Director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) will give the opening keynote address at the April 8 WRRC Annual Conference, "Closing the Gap Between Water Supply and Demand."

CALS Releases Two New Publications on Water Quality and Evaporation

 

The University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Cooperative Extension recently released two new 

water-focused publications. 

"An Arizona Guide to Water Quality and Uses" was authored by Janick F. Artiola, Gary Hix, Charles Gerba and James J. Riley, and "Basics of Evaporation and Evapotranspiration," by Paul Brown.

Tucson Village Farm Offers Beginning Farmer Program Starting Feb. 12

 

Registration is now open for Tucson Village Farm's four-part Beginning Farmer workshop series. Workshops begin Feb. 12 (9 a.m. - 12 p.m.) and run through March 26. The $20 series will help attendees develop a business plan for growing high-value specialty crops in a hoop house, and will include information on food production, business planning, marketing and much more.
