 UPDATED Preliminary Agenda for 2014 WRRC Annual Conference
The University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) recently updated the preliminary agenda for its upcoming April 8, 2014 Annual Conference, "Closing the Gap Between Water Supply and Demand."
In addition to opening keynote speaker Sandra Fabritz-Whitney (Director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources) and Kay Brothers (Co-Chair, Colorado River Basin Study Next Steps Working Groups Coordination Team), the WRRC has also confirmed a number of additional panelists and moderators, including Tom Buschatzke (ADWR), Nathan Bracken (WSWC), Taylor Hawkes (The Nature Conservancy), Reagan Waskom (CSU) and many more.

Presentation: Tres Rios: Wetland Ecology in an Arid Environment
Location: WRRC Sol Resnick Conference Room (350 N. Campbell)
Speaker: Ron Elkins, Wetlands Process Control Specialist for City Of Phoenix Tres Rios Flow Regulating Wetlands
This presentation will explore the key facets concerning the City of Phoenix Tres Rios Wetlands. Multiple events led the City of Phoenix to the development of a tertiary wetland treatment system at the 91st Avenue Waste Water Treatment Facility. Ron Elkins will give an overview of the history and events of the as-built project, as well as a review of the operation of the project, which has shown interesting results in many areas, such as water quality and habitat restoration. Note: The WRRC will also webcast this presentation via Blackboard Collaborate.

WRRC Grad Students Win Research Award for Gila River Timeline
Katie Banister and Christopher Fullerton, Graduate Research Assistants for the WRRC's Water RAPIDS (Research and Planning Innovations for Dryland Systems) Program, recently won the Katheryne B. Willock Library Research Award at the annual Graduate and Professional Student Council Student Showcase. Banister and Fullerton received their award for extensive and innovative use of the UA Libraries' information resources as part of a stakeholder-involved participatory assessment project in the Upper Gila River Watershed. Their research has supported an interactive online timeline, a watershed history, and a poster titled Participatory Place-making: Creating a Shared History of the Upper Gila River Watershed of Arizona.

Arizona Project WET Now Hiring Pinal County Water Education Coordinator
Arizona Project WET (APW) is recruiting for the position of Pinal County Water Education Coordinator. The successful candidate will serve as the point person for APW and all water education programming in Pinal County. The goal of the Pinal County Water Education Program is to promote responsible water stewardship through excellent and effective water education targeted to students, teachers, parents, business owners, decision makers and community members. This full-time position is based at the Pinal County Cooperative Extension office in Casa Grande, Ariz., and offers a salary range of $40k - $50k.

Water Sustainability Program Launches Student Fellowship Video
The Water Sustainability Program recently launched a video featuring its 2014 Fellowship Students' research projects, including explanations of how each project applies to Arizona water. This year's Fellows are working on a range of topics, including monsoon variability, the removal of trace organic compounds from effluent, and much more. Learn more here. Watch the video:

WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal Featured in Ariz. Business Magazine
WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal recently spoke with Michael Gossie from Arizona Business Magazine for the article, "Consider the Source." The magazine's November-December issue highlights water as an issue of concern in Arizona.
Along with four other statewide water experts, Dr. Megdal discusses water scarcity, management, sustainability and pricing in Arizona.

Registration Open for "Transforming Research Into Practice" Workshop
The WRRC and AZ Water are co-sponsoring a Jan. 15, 2014 workshop, "Transforming Research into Practice: Finding Solutions to Arizona Water Challenges." The day-long (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.) interactive workshop aims to bridge gaps between scientific research, industry and utilities, and will feature a special session honoring the research legacy of Dr. Herman Bouwer. Registration is $40 (AZ Water Member), $50 (Non-Member) and $20 (Student).

Pima County Extension Offers Dec. 7 Rainwater Harvesting Rebate Class
On Saturday., Dec. 7 (12 - 3 p.m.), join one of Pima County Cooperative Extension's landscape professional instructors for a close look at water-smart rainwater harvesting systems for the home landscape. This free, informative workshop will focus on designing a passive and active rainwater catchment system for a residential landscape.
