Keynote Speakers: Sandra Fabritz-Whitney and Kay Brothers 
The University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) recently released the preliminary agenda for its upcoming April 8, 2014 Annual Conference, "Closing the Gap Between Water Supply and Demand." 
 
The preliminary agenda features outstanding speakers, including opening keynote speaker Sandra Fabritz-Whitney, Director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR). Kay Brothers, Co-Chair of the Colorado River Basin Study Next Steps Working Groups Coordination Team, will also be speaking during the morning session. See the full preliminary agenda here

Speaker: Ron Elkins, Wetlands Process Control Specialist for City Of Phoenix Tres Rios Flow Regulating Wetlands


This presentation will explore the key facets concerning the City of Phoenix Tres Rios Wetlands. Multiple events led the City of Phoenix to the development of a tertiary wetland treatment system at the 91st Avenue Waste Water Treatment Facility. Ron Elkins will give an overview of the history and events of the as-built project, as well as a review of the operation of the project, which has shown interesting results in many areas, such as water quality and habitat restoration. 

  
WRRC's Kelly Mott Lacroix Wins Two Awards at Graduate Research Blitz 

 

Kelly Mott Lacroix, Analyst for the WRRC's Water RAPIDS (Research and Planning Innovations for Dryland Systems) Program, won two awards at the UA Institute of the Environment's Graduate Research Blitz this week. 

 

Lacroix took home to top award in two categories: Best Research ("Exploring Environmental Flow Needs and Responses in Arizona: The Environmental Water Demands Database") and Best Research Presentation: Linkage Between Research and Society.

Water RAPIDS Program Hiring Graduate Research Assistant for 2014

 

The WRRC is hiring a 0.50 FTE Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) to work with the Water RAPIDS (Research and Planning Innovations for Dryland Systems) team. The GRA will assist the team in researching water policy and management issues, engaging stakeholders in watershed scenario planning and in providing technical expertise, primarily utilizing Arc GIS software and analysis skills. 

 

This one-year contract position starts Jan. 2014, with possible extension depending on funding.

Nov. 21 Webinar: Sharon B. Megdal to Discuss Groundwater Research 
 
WRRC Director Sharon B. Megdal and her NOAA project partner Eylon Shamir (Hydrologic Research Center) will speak on "Incorporating Climate Information and Stakeholder Engagement in Groundwater Resources Planning and Management" at a Nov. 21 webinar (1 - 2 p.m. EST/11 a.m. - noon MST). Dr. Megdal's presentation is part of a webinar series on Climate and Water Management co-hosted by NOAA/SARP, NIDIS, WRF, WEF, WERF, WaterRF, and AWWA.

Arizona Project WET Conducts School Water Audit with 180 Students

 

Tara Oakes, Community Coordinator for Arizona Project WET's Water Investigations Program (WIP), led a water audit earlier this week at Campo Verde High School in Gilbert with 180 students. 

 

The students investigated water use at their school's bathroom faucets and initiated changes by installing water-efficient technology. Over the course of the coming week, they will quantify and assess water savings.

WRRC to Host Nov. 20 GCASE Program Milestone Workshop

 

The WRRC will host a Nov. 20 Milestone Workshop for its Groundwater, Climate And Stakeholder Engagement (GCASE) program, which combines innovative groundwater modeling with extensive stakeholder participation. Highly interested stakeholders are invited to attend as GCASE presents the results of a case study on the Upper Santa Cruz River and shallow groundwater aquifers near Nogales, Ariz. The workshop will be held in the WRRC's Sol Resnick Conference Room (350 N. Campbell). RSVP required; contact Jacob Prietto for details. 

 
WCHE Radio (Tampa): Jean McLain on Antibiotic Resistance

 

WRRC Associate Director Dr. Jean McLain recently spoke with WCHE Radio in Tampa, Fla. about her presentation at the Nov. 5 annual meetings of the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America and the Soil Science Society International. Dr. McLain discussed her presentation, "Antibiotic Resistance in the Environment: A Call to Action," which included research on resistance to antibiotics in bacteria found in riparian soils from wetlands recharged with wastewater. Yavapai County Extension Offers Master Gardener Class

 

Applications are being accepted for the 2014 University of Arizona Master Gardener Volunteer Training, to be held in the Verde Valley (Wed. mornings, Jan. 29 - May 14). The course provides research-based information on basic botany, soils, fruit tree care, planting, staking, pruning, ornamental trees and shrubs, water/irrigation, wildlife, insects, integrated pest management, vegetables, weed management, natural resources, plant diseases, pesticide safety, forest health, and fire-wise landscaping.
