GNC RECIPIENT OF SEVERAL SCOUT PROJECTS
Right now Good Neighbor Center is in the middle of some minor renovations. By that, we mean that there are five - five! - Scout and Volunteer projects happening at the shelter. We are so excited to be the recipient of these projects and we are so grateful that there are such wonderful young men and women in our community who want to help Good Neighbor Center! Each of these projects will allow our residents to have a safer and more pleasant stay at our shelter. Continue reading for more details on each project.

Redecorated Living Area
We have a communal living area for our residents' use with a couch, television, children's toys, and telephone. It has been several years since the living area was painted and redecorated. There is a young woman working on her Girl Scout project at GNC and she is painting the living area as well as replacing the curtains, the storage of the toys, and the décor.

Birthday Celebrations
At GNC, we make sure to celebrate the birthday of every child living in the shelter. Megan Lyons and her two children are very special volunteers. They collect everything needed to celebrate the children's birthdays in-shelter each month. The family bakes a cake, provides ice cream, gifts, and party favors for all of the children. In doing this, they make each child's birthday a special celebration.

New Dining Chairs & Tables
One young man is completing his Eagle Scout project at GNC by raising money to replace all of our dining room chairs and reinforcing the dining room tables we already have. This will make meals a safer experience for our residents.

Redecorated Dining Area
Another young man is helping Good Neighbor Center through his Eagle Scout project by repainting our dining room and replacing the blinds and curtains to make meals a more pleasant experience.

New Library Bookshelves
We have a small library for residents to use, but the aged bookshelves are not in very good shape and struggle to support the weight of the books. Another young man is completing his Eagle Scout project by building custom bookshelves so residents can once again enjoy our library.

 DIRECTOR'S NOTE
As I write this, two of the men who live here are in the parking lot trying to get a truck running. The owner is a pretty fair mechanic and has determined that the problem is a faulty intake manifold. He has made several calls and the cheapest replacement part he can find will cost more than $350. If this was my truck, I would wince, but I would be able to find the money to pay for the necessary parts (and a mechanic to do the work). It is a major setback for this family and indicative of an important aspect of homelessness. Read more
