Greetings!

Hooray! December is here! Our staff, along with many volunteers are busy getting ready for the holiday that is approaching soon. There are so many wonderful things that are happening, we would like to share them with you in this newsletter.

 A Family Reborn

Ten years after coming to America from the Philippines, Mindy (we have changed the family names due to confidentiality reasons) had built a good life for herself and her four-year-old son.  Mindy and her boyfriend, Peter, had jobs, their son was in preschool, and they had a cozy apartment.  Then circumstances beyond their control turned their lives upside down...

"Give a Little" with Pottery Barn

When Pottery Barn wanted to create a program to support local charities in 2010, it seemed only fitting that the program focus on the home.  Pottery Barn believes everyone deserves a safe and dignified place to live and they use those ideas when choosing charities for their Give a Little program.  After extensive research, it was determined that Good Neighbor Center strives to provide a safe and dignified place for families to live in their time of need.
Pottery Barn is selling two items this year to support the Give a Little program: the Grand Chenille Throw and the Peace Heart Ornament.  Proceeds from both items sold through the end of December in all stores nation-wide are divided equally among the chosen charities.
Thank you to Pottery Barn for choosing Good Neighbor Center for your Give a Little program this year and to all of the people who are supporting the program with their purchases!

Warm your Toes with Coffee Creek

When Kelly Shannon was working on her master's degree and running the work based education program at Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, she asked recently released inmates to name their biggest grievance with the release program.  Their number one answer: they did not feel connected to the community.  Kelly brainstormed and came up with a sock drive to get the inmates involved with the community during their incarceration at Coffee Creek and to make their transition out an easier one.

Nine years later, the ladies at Coffee Creek raise money for the sock drive in various ways.  The largest contribution comes out of their pockets...

Christmas Food Boxes

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Tigard for sponsoring our Christmas food boxes this year.  These boxes include everything needed to create a homemade Christmas meal. There are 30 families in our Housing Stabilization and Shelter + Care programs that will be getting boxes this Christmas.  Thank you Rotary Club; we couldn't do it without you!

Jordan Kent's Beary Christmas

This year, Good Neighbor Center was chosen to participate in Jordan Kent's Beary Christmas!  Jordan Kent's Beary Christmas  is a program that provides an evening of Christmas fun for families in need.  The children get to build something at Build-a-Bear Workshop, families get their pictures taken with Santa, and everyone gets a pizza party.  Each family receives a Christmas gift basket full of decorations and a grocery gift card.  Thank you to the wonderful people at Jordan Kent's Beary Christmas for choosing Good Neighbor Center this year!

Director's Note

The holiday season is upon us - my favorite time of year.  Part of that, of course, is that I can still find my inner child, hoping for that special item under the tree.  More importantly, I find it wonderful that during the holidays so many people make a point of sharing their time, treasure and talent with those in need.
