BandNew Wind Band works
Dionysiaques
Florent Schmitt/Felix Hauswirth

Dionysiaques

Here it is. Dionysiaques by Florent Schmitt. Now available for sale - you no longer need to rent the old set of handwritten parts, which probably cost you more in rental fees than it will to buy this set.

Edited by Felix Hauswirth, this masterwork for wind band has long been a staple of the repertoire, considered the pre-eminent composition of original French wind band music. Re-scored by Felix for modern wind instrumentation, the score and parts have been visually cleaned up and corrected for ease of use and study.

Listen to a performance of this masterwork, preview the score, and stop by booth 1104 to pick up your copy at Midwest.

Earth Song
Frank Ticheli

Earth Song

Earth Song for concert band is a transcription of Ticheli's choral work of the same name, which is itself a setting of a chorale section of Ticheli's previous band work, Sanctuary.

After completing Sanctuary, Ticheli became intrigued by the idea of making a choral version of a part of that work. Later that year he was able to create a poem that reflected the music's poignant lyricism, and fit with the rhythmic stresses and melodic contour of Sanctuary's melody.

Six years later he was asked about making a band transcription of the choral setting. This allowed Ticheli to work a piece that had aspects of both settings: the rich textured lyricism and more concise nature of the choral setting, plus the wider color palette and expressive power of the concert band forebear.  Thus, Earth Song was born: a more concise (and less technically demanding) descendent of Sanctuary. You can listen to the choral setting of Earth Song here.

Trois Rag Caprices
Darius Milhaud / Johann De Meij

The Trois Rag-Caprices for piano were composed by Darius Milhaud in the summer of 1922, one year before one of his most famous and popular ballets,  La Creation du Monde, one of the most striking examples of jazz influences in classical music. The Trois Rag-Caprices could be considered as a kind of preliminary sketch for La Creation du Monde, as there are clear similarities between both compositions as to their rhythmical and harmonic aspects.

The Trois Rag-Caprices were orchestrated for symphony orchestra by Milhaud himself some time later. Johan de Meij has now arranged this setting for the wind medium. You can listen to a streaming audio recording at his website. In addition, you can listen to the original piano edition and see how the orchestrational transformation took place.
