Following a short public hearing on the district budget for 2016-17, the board voted to adopt the budget as published. The mill levy will remain unchanged. The majority of the budget remains frozen under the block grant law, with the exception of special education, capital outlay and supplemental general funds. However, an increase in state aid for supplemental general fund will be offset by a decrease in local funds so the district will not see an increase in LOB funds. The district does expect an increase in capital outlay funds.
New Playground at Maynard
The board authorized the district to proceed with a new playground at Maynard Early Childhood Center that is developmentally appropriate for 3 and 4 year olds. The project will be paid for with grant funds from the Lewis H. Humphreys Charitable Trust and the Clint Bowyer 79 Fund, along with $6,552 in district funds. The project is expected to be complete in October.
Other Board Business
The board approved the following:
- a Memorandum of Understanding with Crosswinds Counseling and Wellness for the PASS behavorial health program for K-5 students
- an $11,000 grant award from the Jones Trust for the JAG-Kansas program at EHS
- an agreement with the Emporia Country Club for the use of the golf course by the EHS golf teams
