Horizon Award Winners
Alissa Miller & Manuel Estrada are among the 32 2016 Kansas Horizon Award winners. The award goes to the state's best young teachers based on their first-year teaching experience.
Alissa teaches 6th grade language arts at EMS; Manuel teaches 3rd grade at Walnut. Both received the news by phone last week from Kansas Commissioner of Education Randy Watson. Both teachers were recognized by the Board of Education Wednesday night.

2016-17 EMS Courses
The board approved the 2016-17 Enrollment Planning Guide for Emporia Middle School. The course guide reflects the change to the trimester schedule. EMS students will experience minimal change with the new schedule. Science, social studies and electives will continue to be offered every other day; math and language arts will continue to meet daily.

Revised 2016-17 Calendar
The board approved revisions to the adopted calendar for 2016-17 to reflect the trimester schedule. The revised one-page calendar is now available on the Calendar Page of the website.

Consent Agenda
The board approved the following:
  • Grants totaling $2,309.63 from Emporia Community Foundation & Emporia Public School Fund to the EHS Library 
  • A $500 matching grant from Capstone Books to Village
  • A $3,807 donation from the Timmerman PTO to the school
  • Requests to seek bids for roof repairs and buses
