Glow Run 5K
Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed to help with the Glow Run Saturday, Aug. 29. The run/walk begins at 8 pm and starts and finishes at Emporia High School. Runners/walkers can still register; the cost increases to $45 Friday. Anyone interested can sign up to volunteer here:

September 1 Deadline
September 1 is the deadline to submit transcripts or other verification of hours, additional degrees and endorsements that could result in additional pay or movement on the salary schedule. Send the information to Kathy Dreier in the Business Office.

Personal Illness Pool
October 1 is the deadline to sign up for the Personal Illness Pool for the first time. The pool provides additional temporary leave to employees who have used all chargeable leave and have experienced "extraordinary circumstances" that require additional leave. Contact Human Resources at 341-2330 for more information.

Imagine Emporia
The first public meeting for the Imagine Emporia Together: Community Vision Plan is Monday, Aug. 24, from 7-9 pm at Flint Hills Technical College. Learn more here.

Main Street Welcomes 
New Teachers
Emporia Main Street and several local businesses welcomed new teachers at a Mix & Match event last week at Brickyard 20. Approximately 45 teachers learned about activities they can get involved in across the community. Other sponsors were US Cellular, ValuNet and Radius.

Employee Wellness Updates
It is not too late to register to participate in our new Employee Wellness Program. If you have already registered, but have not received your wristband, contact Heather Patterson or Samantha Hernandez.

Lift off for Health  Community Health Fair is scheduled Saturday, Sept 19, 8 am-noon at the Flinthills Mall. All employees are encouraged to attend. Staff also are encouraged to bring biometric screening information and Health Risk Assessment if you want to meet with BCBS disease management specialists for a free health coaching session. All employees can attend the FREE health coaching sessions with BCBS regardless of health insurance coverage.  

The district will offer FREE biometric screenings for any employee registered in the wellness program. Watch for information from Heather Patterson in your e-mail.   

Group Wellness Classes are forming now to start in September. Stay tuned for more information about these FREE classes for employees.

2015-16 Budget Adopted
The board adopted the 2015-16 budget as presented.

Board Will Fill Vacancy
Brent Windsor completed his final meeting as a board member, the board approved the public notice of the vacancy.

The board will take applications from interested citizens until noon Sept. 9. Applications will be available on the website and at Mary Herbert Education Center starting Monday. Applicants must be 18 years old, registered to vote, and a resident of USD 253. Contact Dana Witten for more information.
Scholarship Funds
The board tabled a recommendation to transfer district-managed scholarship funds to the Emporia Community Foundation to gather additional information. ECF has greater options for investing the funds, which would increase the amount of money available for scholarships.

Employee Handbook
The board approved revisions to the Classified Employee Handbook.

Consent Agenda
The board approved these consent agenda items:
  • Agreements to use the Emporia Country Club and the Municipal Golf Course for EHS Golf
  • A $2,000 donation from American Fidelity to the District Wellness Program
  • Request to dispose of 80 Apple laptop computers
