Health Insurance News
The board heard an update of health and dental insurance rates for district employees for the plan year starting October 1, 2015. Health insurance rates will increase 9-10 percent with mail prescriptions remaining at $170 for a 90-day supply. Employees will continue to have two options for coverage, and a third option with a higher deductible is being added. Dental rates also will increase 7 percent. Employees will get full details from the Business Office by mail soon, and dates to meet with American Fidelity representatives will be included.

Legislative Update
The board received an update on the state legislature and the status of a revenue bill to balance the budget. If the legislature does not approve a tax plan, the governor will be required to make allotments to balance the budget. Based on information from the Kansas State Department of Education, that would reduce school budgets another 6 percent. For Emporia, the reduction would be $2 million on top of reductions from the block grant funding.

2016-17 School Calendar
The board approved the school calendar for 2016-17 as recommended by the Professional Development Council. The calendar includes all of the components included in the 2015-16 Master Agreement with teachers and incorporates three STREAM Project days for a total of 174 days of student contact.

Sale of Kansas Avenue Building
The board voted to dispose of the Kansas Avenue building at 315 S Market St., and advertise the building for sale or lease.

Recruitment & Retention

The board received a report on the teacher retention rates for Kansas and the district. Emporia is following national trends with an average 12 percent turnover among teachers each year, with turnover higher among first-year teachers. The district created a Recruitment & Retention Committee to recommend strategies that will improve job satisfaction.

Consent Agenda

The board approved the following:

  • request to dispose of computer monitors and equipment at a public sale June 23
  • renewal agreement for participation in the federal school lunch program
