Save the Date!
May 20 Staff Recognition
The annual District Staff Recognition Program will be Tuesday, May 20, at Emporia High School. Refreshments will be served starting at 5 pm; the program will begin at 5:30. The district will present length-of-service awards, recognize state and national award winners, and honor a large group of retirees. The event is free for all employees and a guest. Watch for sign-up sheets in your buildings soon!
Annual KPERS Statements
STREAM Pay Date
The pay date for the extra STREAM days will be June 15 rather than June 1. This affects all classified staff who do not have STREAM days included in their work agreements.
There is still time to register for the 5K Bunny Hop on April 19 and the AVID 6K Running for College on May 3. Follow the links above to register online or use these printed forms:
FHTC Survey Invitation

Celebrating
Good News
Successful Blood Drive & Campaign
Logan Avenue students & staff raised $3,584.30 for childhood cancer research during the Pennies for Patients Campaign Mar 3-14! As promised, Principal Jessica Griffin kissed a pig in honor of the successful drive. The school's blood drive also netted 39 pints of blood. Thank you to everyone who supported the effort!
Class of 1962 Recognition
Members of the EHS Class of 1962 visited the high school campus Tuesday to dedicate the new bell plaque installed in their honor. The class donated $6,200 toward the cost of moving the bell from the old EHS campus on Sixth Avenue to the current campus and placing it on a new pedestal. Thanks to the Class of 1962!

Paraguay-Kansas Teacher Exchange
Emporia teachers are invited to apply to participate in a Paraguay-Kansas teacher exchange in June 2014 through Emporia State University. The program intends to foster teaching connections and exchanges between Kansas and Paraguay teachers. A first cohort of Kansas teachers (possibly two teachers) from USD 253 will visit Paraguay for 15 days in June.

Friend of Education Award
 Board President Brent Windsor presented a Friend of Education Award to Angie Miller, representing Emporia State Federal Credit Union. The business was nominated by the district in the category of Business Partner.
Administrative Appointments
As part of the personnel report, the board approved the appointment of three assistant principals effective July 1.
- Allyson Lyman has been named EMS assistant principal, filling the vacancy of Katie Adams, who is transferring to Riverside.
- Garrett Mitchell & Trevor Mathews have been named assistant principals, filling the positions of Britton Hart and Amy McAnarney.
Impact of School Finance Bill
Assistant Superintendent Rob Scheib summarized the bill passed by the Kansas Legislature over the weekend. The bill is now awaiting the governor's signature. The bill increases some funding for the district and reduces funding in other areas. Overall, the legislation likely will provide an increase in funding with some saving to taxpayers.
Other Board Business
Security Cameras
The board approved the first phase purchase of security cameras not to exceed $115,000 from AOS. Board members asked district administration to make phases 2 and 3 a priority after July 1 when the new budget year begins.
Policy Changes
The board approved proposed policy changes to section GB - certified personnel.
Student Handbooks
The board approved the 2014-15 student handbooks for EHS and PK - 5 schools.
Non-Renewal Resolution
The board adopted a resolution of intent to non-renew a certified teacher's contract for 2014-15
