Almost 40 healthcare students from North America traveled to Israel in June on APF's 10-day Medical Birthright program. During this exhilarating trip, future doctors, nurses and other healthcare providers had the pleasure of experiencing Israel as tourists while learning about the country's medical practice.

As in previous years, Dr. Jeffrey Devries, APF board member, accompanied the group, along with Amir Goldshtein, APF's Programs Manager.

Dr. Asaf Yanir and his family
Kids, cancer and bone marrow transplantation are Dr. Asaf Yanir's passion.

The 40-year-old Haifa native, a 2015-2016 APF Clinical Fellow in Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children's Hospital (TXCH), often works "25 hours a day," seven days a week to pursue his medical heart's delight.

"I love working with kids, both emotionally and medically," says Yanir. "Emotionally, you get to interact in a different way than you do with adults. And I like providing support for parents, who are letting me take care of the most important thing in their lives.

Dr. Salman Zarka Speaks About Providing Humanitarian Aid to Syrian War Victims
Dr. Zarka speaking at the Bernstein's New York HQ Office

Although Syria has been Israel's sworn enemy for many years, it hasn't stopped Israel from caring for more than 2,000 wounded and sick Syrians since 2013.
Dr. Salman Zarka, Director General of Ziv Medical Center in Zefat, is on a mission to inform the world that his hospital is providing medical and humanitarian care to victims of the Syrian Civil War. APF invited Dr. Zarka on a U.S. speaking tour. This spring he gave talks at several venues in New York, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Florida.

Special thanks:
APF is deeply grateful to all the volunteers at the Friends of Ziv Medical Center community for their hard work in making Dr. Zarka's Florida engagements a reality. We would also like to extend our warm gratitude to Temple Beth Torah in Aventura, FL, and Temple Beth-Am in Jupiter, FL, which hosted gatherings. Special thank-yous go out to APF board member Richard Klitzberg, who organized the event at his community in Boca Raton; the entire team at the Israeli Consulate in Atlanta for their warm Southern hospitality; the Atlanta AJC for organizing the event; Dr. Eddie Greenberg and his wife, Galia, for holding an event with Dr. Zarka at their home. Our sincere gratitude to the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., and especially to Israeli Deputy Chief of Mission, Reuven Azar, for hosting a special event at his home in Maryland. Dr. Zarka was touched by the warm hospitality he received everywhere we traveled.
